I love makeup and I love putting on makeup – why else would you think I’d be working as a writer at Daily Vanity? While foundation and concealer are able to cover up blemishes and discolouration on my face, there’s something about myself that can’t be covered up with makeup – my teeth. I have teeth stains on my two front teeth that are really obvious in person and in pictures when I give a big smile, which also happens to be my natural smile.

Focus on my teeth and you’ll be able to see it. It looks even more obvious in close up photos! Yikes!

According to the dentist, I breathe through my mouth when I sleep. Like this-

What happens is that the underside of my lip ends up resting onto the surface of my teeth and as I continue breathing, it dries the surface of my teeth. Combined with the upper lip resting on it, it creates a stain over time. It’s something I’m really insecure about and it makes me think twice (sometimes three times) about giving off my big smile. It doesn’t help that I’m getting married soon!

When my editor asked me to give iWhite’s Instant Teeth Whitening Kit a shot, I agreed to try it in hopes that it would help to minimise the appearance of the stain on my teeth and make them look whiter.
iWhite instant teeth whitening tray

iWhite’s Instant Teeth Whitening Kit comes with 10 prefilled trays that you align to the top and bottom of your teeth and leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing off. It also claims to give visible results simply by using it consecutively for five days and 20 minutes each time together with the iWhite Instant Whitening Toothpaste and Instant Whitening Mouthwash. iwhite-mouthwash-and-toothpasteThe products contain:

  • Phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid (PAP): Teeth lose their natural colour as chromatic pigments are deposited over time. These whitening molecules work hard to break down these pigments and eliminate stains.
  • Bioactive crystals: The crystals will fixate on the tooth and form a layer that leads to an instant whitening effect.
  • Bioavailable calcium deposits: Located beneath the enamel, dentin is naturally yellow and shines through the translucent enamel. The deposits remineralise teeth and in turn, the thicker front layer will reveal less of the underlying yellow dentin.

My experience

iwhite-tray-1

I was expecting to have a negative reaction to the prefilled trays, such as tooth sensitivity or burning sensation, considering how fast the product promises to work. However, after having used it for five days consecutively and for 20 minutes each time, I did not experience anything like that at all! The products claim to be absolutely safe, and I have to agree on that.

The reason why is because iWhite products don’t contain any hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a whitening agent that causes sensitive teeth and it’s commonly found in other teeth whitening products, even the treatments that you go for at the dental clinic. The gel itself didn’t taste bad; it has a minty taste that reminds me of regular toothpaste. I didn’t face any difficulty or discomfort when I had the trays in my mouth.

The trays were firm that they retained their shape to ensure the gel in them worked its magic on my teeth. It was also soft such that it didn’t hurt my gums or mouth.  Just like the iWhite Instant Whitening Kit, the mouthwash and toothpaste were really gentle and didn’t sting or hurt my mouth. The mouthwash was not as minty or stinging as the other ones in the market (probably because of its purpose- whitening). All of the products left a fresh and minty feeling after use.

User-experience wise, I was really impressed by how easy, comfortable, and gentle the products were were on my teeth, gums, and mouth.

The results: Did it work?

Although it didn’t completely remove all of the stains on my teeth, you can tell from the picture above that the stains look lighter after using the iWhite Instant Teeth Whitening Kit for five days consecutively. My colleague also highlighted to me that she thought my teeth looked whiter than before! It goes to show that this kit really does give positive results in five days – you can see it for yourself. Due to the severity of my teeth stains, I think I will continue to purchase and use the kit for a longer period of time to see if it further lightens the stains. I will also continue using the toothpaste and mouthwash to continue to improve the stains on my teeth.

Because my wedding is approaching, I have considered going for professional teeth whitening previously, but the prices put me off. And to go through all that just for one day (Yes, it’s an important day. But it will stain again because I will still continue breathing through my mouth when I sleep after I’m married! *cries*) is too much hassle, and too much money spent. With the iWhite’s Instant Teeth Whitening Kit, I can do something about my teeth at the comfort of my own home, while watching Netflix.

iWhite’s Instant Teeth Whitening Kit retails at SGD49.90 per box that contains five sets of trays, while the Instant Whitening Toothpaste and Instant Whitening Mouthwash retails at SGD9.90 and SGD10 respectively. All of the prices of the products added up together would obviously be cheaper than what would have cost me to go for an in-clinic service.

Would I recommend it?

Yes! I think it’s worth a shot especially if you have regular stained teeth (by coffee or cigarette). It would also be a good product to use before a big event- like a date, dinner and dance events, special occasions, weddings or a photo-shoot.

Other than making the teeth look whiter, another good thing about iWhite is that it restores your enamel. It contains MOHA-Complex which is composed of snowwhite hydroxyapatite microcrystals that are released on the enamel. Hydroxyapatite is the key building block of teeth and by releasing the hydroxyl-apatite crystals, it will help to restore and rebuild the enamel. Here’s to whiter and stronger teeth!

The iWhite Instant Teeth Whitening Kit, Toothpaste (SGD9.90) and Mouthwash (SGD10)  is available at selected Guardian stores, selected Watsons store, Redmart, and Myhealthscoop.
