Our reader Leng asked:

I have heard that hair gel causes hair fall. My husband has been using it for hairstyling for a long time and recently, I noticed that his hair is thinning. Should I tell him to stop using it?

hair problem

To answer your question, we first have to explain how hair grows. Every hair on our heads grow in phases: after growing for a few years, it goes into a resting period for about two weeks, and finally falls off. This gives way to the growth of a new strand of hair.

The problem arises when the build-up of sebum, dead skin cells and styling products like hair gel clogs the hair follicles on the scalp and this leads to hair loss. In other words, while hair gel doesn’t directly cause the problem of hair fall, if you don’t take care of your scalp, styling products may contribute to the clogging of the follicles, which prevents hair from growing again.

Over time, if this problem is not treated or resolved, you’ll notice that your crowning glory isn’t as glorious as before.

Hairstyling can be a double-edged sword in that people style their hair to make it look better, but over-styling can sometimes lead to hair problems, particularly hair loss. Therefore, if you wish to regularly use a styling product, remember to always do a thorough cleansing, to make sure that every bit of the product is removed at the end of the day. Otherwise, if you can help it, avoid these products altogether.

Other than styling products, the use of heat devices such as flat irons and hair dryers can also make hair styling a bane to hair health. Heat from these tools can significantly weaken hair proteins. This in turn makes hair more brittle and prone to breaking.

Consider an earlier shower so that you can take some time to air-dry your hair instead. And if you have to use heating tools for styling purposes, always apply a heat protectant.
