Have you ever been troubled by persistent acne that never seems to go away, no matter how many skincare products you use? You’re not alone! A whooping 80% of teenagers worldwide are afflicted with acne, and 40% of adults report suffering from acne as well.

Now, you may have considered going to a dermatologist, but eventually decided against it due to reasons such as cost and time. With that in mind, French brand La Roche-Posay, which is known for its range of products that are suitable for sensitive and acne-prone skin, has released announced its latest innovation that promises to be life-changing: the Effaclar SpotScan.

Developed with dermatologists for professional-level accuracy, the Effaclar SpotScan uses artificial intelligence based on extensive scientific data to make personalized acne diagnosis. Yes, that means you can actually have your acne diagnosed anywhere, any time, without having to book an appointment with a dermatologist!

So, how does Effaclar SpotScan work?

This service is very user-friendly, and all it takes is three simple steps for a complete diagnosis:

Step 1: Take selfies to see your acne grade

La Roche Posay Effaclar Spotscan Skin Grade

Just take three selfies: center, left profile, right profile. Effaclar SpotScan will analyze them to count your skin imperfections, localise them, and distinguish them (spots, blackheads and pigmented marks).

From these, the tool will determine your acne grade from 0 to 4+. A grade of 0 would indicate that you have clear skin, with almost no lesions. A grade of 4+ would indicate that you have severe acne. If you receive a grade of 3 (moderate), you will actually receive an alert to visit a dermatologist.

Step 2: See recommended tips and track your progress

Effaclar SpotScan will give you skincare tips based on your skin grade and type of imperfections, so that you know exactly how you can tackle them. There is also a before/after simulator that lets you see your expected results that are very realistic (nothing like the Meitu Xiuxiu filters!) and track your skin improvements all year long.

Step 3: Receive a personalised routine

Based on your acne grade, Effaclar SpotScan will provide a personalized Effaclar routine. For example, if you have oily skin and are breaking out because of excess sebum, the tool recommends products that control sebum production and reduce skin inflammation.

Effaclar Spotscan review: does it really work?

This tool from La Roche-Posay definitely sounds like a game-changer, and so we put it to the test to see if it is truly as innovative as promised:

Frankly, I was quite surprised by my acne grade of 1/4+, as it was much better than I had thought it would be. However, I’m also amazed that the tool managed to pick up all of my acne accurately, even the acne scars that are fading.

I found out for the first time that my majority of my acne were actually not pimples, but are blackheads! For a very long time, I had been trying different spot treatments for pimples, but never really paid attention to blackhead removals. Now that I know what type of acne I am suffering from, I can change my skincare routine and products used to better target blackheads.

The skincare tips are rather general, but I feel that they are definitely very accurate and useful. I have oily skin, and I definitely attribute my acne to excess sebum production.

I’ve always wanted to visit a dermatologist, but I never got around to doing it because I thought that my acne was controllable and didn’t really require professional help. I’m glad that I tried the Effaclar SpotScan, because now I definitely have a better understanding of my acne problems now.

I think it was a great tool to get a quick access of my skin problem, with the site pointing out specific problem areas.

I am consulting a dermatologist, but some of the results I got on the sites didn’t match what my dermatologist told me (maybe also because of the lighting I took my selfie under).

However, I still feel more comfortable consulting a dermatologist for skin problems as I can address my concerns in a more personalised way.

My grade was 0/4+ and I wasn’t surprised because I generally have quite clear skin apart from some pigmented spots. But I’m glad that this is not one of those tools that exaggerate results so you’d be scared into purchasing more products.

They pointed out one area as a pimple and I think it was exactly what I thought it was. But it was already healing almost completely, so it’s amazing that the tool managed to pick that up.

The skincare tips provided were pretty general for me, since I didn’t have much issues.

Call me old-fashioned, but I still prefer talking to a human person so I can ask as many questions as I want. But this tool definitely helps set a foundation to understanding your skin a little better, especially for those who don’t typically visit a dermatologist.

I’m sold! How do I get to try the Effaclar SpotScan?
