When Dyson first launched its Airwrap styler in 2018, we were blown away – no pun intended. The innovative styler promised to style without extreme heat and has a unique Coanda airflow technology that literally lets your hair curl itself.

I know that Daily Vanity readers love the device. So much so that when the brand announced that they’ll be having longer barrels for the Airwrap in 2019, we saw so much interest from everyone after we shared the news.

Now, brace yourself because Dyson is releasing more than just new attachments for the Airwrap – the next-generation Airwrap also comes with enhanced Coanda airflow, which will allow you to have faster, easier styling – yes, without extreme heat, just as before.

What’s new with the Dyson Airwrap multi-styler?

Enhanced Coanda effect

Look forward to an enhanced airflow, thanks to an upgraded design to multiply the Coanda effect of the Airwrap. This allows faster styling compared to the previous version.

Rotating cool tip design so you can use the same barrel for curls in different directions

For those who owned the first generation of the Dyson Airwrap, the most obvious improvement to you is probably the re-engineered attachments.

If you use the Airwrap barrels often for curling, you’ll know that the previous version comes with four barrels – two 30mm and two 40mm ones, one to direct airflow in clockwise, and another in an anti-clockwise direction.

You can change the direction of airflow more easily with the rotating cool tips of the new barrels.

You’ll be happy to know that the kit now comes with only two barrels. It is able to do it because the engineers have re-designed it to include a rotating cool tip to change the direction of the airflow.

Besides the standard 30mm and 40mm barrels, you can also opt for 30mm long, 40mm long, and 20mm long barrels, to achieve the styles that you like, according to your hair length. (Note: long barrels are recommended for those with hair that goes beyond the chest.)

New Coanda smoothing dryer

This new attachment performs two functions: drying and smoothing. You can switch its mode by rotating its tip (first photo).

The attachment that looked like a mini Supersonic hairdryer has been replaced with the smoothing dryer. This can be used to quickly take hair from wet to damp so it’s ready for styling. But it also combines a second function – hiding flyaways with one pass – you can switch to this mode simply by rotating its tip.

New firm and soft brushes

If you’ve been using the Airwrap to create straighter styles, you’ll be happy to know that the new brushes, along with the enhanced Coanda airflow, can help give you better control and be able to achieve a straighter style more quickly.

Next generation Dyson Airwrap multi-styler (2022) review

Of the Dyson hair devices I own, the Airwrap is one that I reach out for most frequently. It is my go-to styling tool whenever I’m going for a big event or if I’m preparing to look good before a shoot.

This is why the news of this new launch excited me a lot.

Getting my hands on the new Airwrap helped make whatever I’ve learnt about it during the press conference make sense.

When the engineers spoke about the enhanced Coanda effect, it really became very clear the moment I brought the new Airwrap multi-styler to my hair; the airflow felt stronger but more precise, which helps me be able to control it better while to style my hair more quickly.

But the new feature that was most relevant to me was the re-engineered barrels.

Previously, it was significantly more troublesome because whenever I realise I was using the wrong barrel (air flowing in the wrong direction) or wanted to do mix curls (alternating clockwise and anti-clockwise curls), I had to keep switching attachments mid-style.

This means that it could get a little confusing and definitely took a much longer time for styling.

Better control also makes it easier for me to reach the hair at the back of my head.

Now, I could easily change the direction of the airflow whenever I want simply by rotating the cool tip. This feature makes it even more foolproof for anyone new to the device to pick up the technique without feeling flustered.

While underrated, the firm and soft brushes are attachments that I use pretty often too. My naturally wavy hair could do with some straightening just so that I can achieve a “neater”, more manageable style on days I don’t have too much time to do curls but still wanted my hair to look good.

The round brush can be used to style my bangs more easily.

The re-engineered Airwrap is able to “attract” hair more easily, which gives me better styling control. With the previous styler, I find myself holding on to the tips of my hair to get a better grip, but now, I could style with one hand.

The enhanced Coanda effect also offers a smoother, straighter result more quickly, saving me time.

However, just like the first generation Airwrap, I still find that the results aren’t very long-lasting, compared to conventional stylers.

Regarding this, I have a few tips to share:

  • I typically don’t use the Airwrap if I need my hairstyle to stay for the entire day (I have the same experience with the new version too). This means that I only reach out for it if I need a good hairstyle for just a few hours (for example, when I’m filming), which is also great because the styling time is short anyway.
  • Always style your hair when it’s slightly damp. I find that dry styling reduces the longevity of the style even more.
  • Use a fixing spray to help extend the longevity of your hairstyle. This is particularly important if you have finer or straighter hair that can’t hold curls very well naturally.

Finally, as a final tip, I’d also highly recommend that you visit a Dyson store and book a styling appointment so you can try out the device for yourself. It’s intriguing to read about it but I can assure you, you’ll only truly know what I’m talking about when you try the Airwrap out for yourself.
