Floral scents have always been my thing, my favourites being rose and jasmine for their soothing effect. Getting to know a new friend, magnolia, via Gucci’s Flora fragrances has convinced me that flower power is well and alive, possibly going to last for the next few generations to come.

What’s even more appealing is that this iconic fragrance collection launched in 2009 is now available in a vibrant new packaging. Inspired by Charlotte Casiraghi, the Gucci Flora  collection includes five key blossoms on the legendary Gucci scarf designed by Vittorio Accornero for H.H. Grace Kelly, Princess Grace of Monaco. Each of the eight exquisite scents appears in a variant of the classic Flora flacon, with the Flora script logo, black cap and bamboo-beaded cord bow. Encased in a slim hexagonal bottle with a glass lid, it is an elegant addition to any vanity table.

The Glamorous Magnolia is part of the collection of four other floral-inspired perfumes – Glorious Mandarin, Gorgeous Gardenia, Gracious Tuberose and Generous Violet. Unlike some floral scents which can pack a pretty heady punch due to the intensity of floral notes, this version has taken a more light-handed approach and go with a petal-soft olfactory touch.

Opening with the top notes of freesia, citrus zest and green leaves, the scent moves quickly into the heart made of peony and magnolia, before settling into the base notes of sandalwood, musk, and warm chocolate. Overall, a flirty bouquet that plays lightly on the senses. I find it a refreshing departure from the signature Gucci fragrances, which tends to linger a bit more.

On the first whiff, I picked up the crispness of fresh cut grass, followed by a sweet creaminess, and ending with a gentle muskiness. While some may feel that it’s far too lightweight a scent, my personal take is that a perfume is meant to be felt – almost as an afterthought – and not overpower. Glamorous Magnolia does just that: make a quiet entrance and let its wearer take over the rest of the show.

The Gucci Flora Glamorous Magnolia EDT (50ml) retails at SGD116 for 50ml and SGD156 for 100ml.
