Your mum had probably been your best advisor in everything beauty-related, because she has been there and done that. However, the beauty industry is rapidly innovating and changing, coming up with new products, tools and trends that come as fast as they go; some of them so bizarre your mother probably cannot wrap their heads around it.

Here we have 10 interesting beauty innovations in the recent years that your mother would raise more than an eyebrow to. Scroll through the list with her and see if she has been secretly following these trends!

1. Lip Tattoos

If you are a fan of Chinese period dramas, you would have noticed imperial concubines would purse their lips with a piece of folded red paper in between, transferring a red tint to their lips. Producers of the lip tattoo seemed to have taken a few lessons from the ancient Chinese and gave it a twist; these days, lip tattoos come in the most outrageous patterns that would probably give the ancient concubines a rude shock.

2. Ultrasonic Facial Cleanser

A prominent local makeup artist once swore by the ultrasonic facial cleanser, saying that he had never experienced anything that cleansed his face as well. Even after using his strongest makeup remover, he could still see traces of makeup slinking off his face with the ultrasonic facial cleanser. However, costing almost $200 per cleanser, your mother would probably won’t understand why your hands can’t do the job well enough.

The ingenuity of these babies is that it was a common resident in your mother’s sewing box at home. For decades, Velcro tape was sewn on the openings of clothing. Who knew that by simply removing the sticky tape, it transforms into a hair tool that keeps stray stands up without leaving pesky kinks?

Your mother probably wore gold as jewelry, or in elaborate traditional costumes (particularly of the wedding variety). But prestige these days have taken a new form: 24 carat gold facial masks and treatments. Critics are still sitting on the fence about the supposed effectiveness of using gold in cosmetics, but something so expensive should be doing some good, right? Right?

We’ve previously done a tutorial on how to do clown contouring to enhance the angles on your face. The results were amazing, but your mother would probably think you’re venturing into Chinese Opera if she sees you before the blending stage!

6. Uzzlang Brows

…or simply referred to as Korean-style brows, this style of trimming your eyebrows involves a soft, muted and unnaturally straight shape. To us, this seems perfectly normal, and even trendy. But to the older generation, this abomination of a brow resembles Crayon Shin-chan’s. Anyway, the Uzzlang brows trend will see a twist this year, according to Korean makeup artists. 7. Ombré Hair

8. Snail Essence Facial Products/Facials

Yes, snail slime facials are actually a thing in countries such as Japan, Korea and Thailand. Image source: abcnews.com

This is especially prevalent in Asian countries, where the use of “natural” ingredients in facial products is a big hit. However, the older generation cannot wrap their heads around this. Perhaps the idea of applying the juices of a garden pest on their faces is just too much to bear.

9. Strobing

An alternative to clown contouring, it applies reflective makeup to points on your face, which gives you a certain glow to your face. It probably won’t freak your mother out with all the different shades of paint on your face, but the effort and time to perfect strobing is certainly something unheard of during their times!
