“You are my fire, the one desire, believe when I say, I want it that way”
Sorry for the cheesy introduction, but it is one thing that came to mind when I heard about the latest Dolce&Gabbana fragrance. First look at it, however, you may really get an “I want it that way” vibe, because of how strong and opulent the packaging looks.
In matte gold and black – colours that are associated with royalty and sophistication – the bottle is inscribed with Stefano Gabbana’s elegant handwriting of “Desire” in gold lettering. The bottle is topped with a multi-faceted black gemstone as a cap, which completes its opulent image.
As for its scent, be prepared to be welcomed by very intense top notes. Concocted with mandarin, lychee and bergamot contrasted with lily of the valley, the top notes are very rich, but at the same time, you can smell a touch of sweetness, thanks to the lily of the valley.
However, within an hour or so, you’d have reached its heart, where heady floral scents take over. Madonna lily, Indian tuberose, jasmine and sweet plum nectar are in the repertoire, although the jasmine scent was probably most evident for me.
The fragrance closes with indulgent bases, including a gourmand note of vanilla infused caramel, melded with warming sandalwood, and a touch of mysterious musk and Cistus Labdanum. These all smell really warm and musky, so it gives off a feeling of mystery and seduction.
Desire overwhelmed me at first, when I first spritz it on with no expectations at all. The really rich top note surprised me a little and I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the scent. Thankfully, the heady scent very quickly mellowed, and actually grows on me. Within minutes, the scent became a lot more subtle. I didn’t get any complaints, and in fact, it was only when I told Keith “Hey, do you know I’m wearing a new perfume?” and he concentrated and sniffed the air around me, that he realised it was something different.
This oriental floral scent is definitely one that I like to wear when I go to work, particularly when I want to exude the impression of a strong, independent woman. Interestingly, it’s very suitable especially when I have a date at night after work, because by the time it evolved into its base notes in the evening, it has already developed into a scent that smells really womanly and sultry.
