Any self-respecting beauty junkie would know that one of the most important – if not the most important – routine for anti-ageing is sun protection. However, even the most religious sunscreen advocate may sometimes forget to cover up thoroughly. Here are some of the most commonly neglected areas that deserve some sunscreen-loving too.
1. Scalp and hair
Not just our facial skin – our scalp and hair, which is the area that’s most exposed to the sun needs some TLC from sunscreen too. If you’re heading out to the sun especially, remember to wear a hat or cap to keep them protected.
Try: Clarins Sunscreen Care Oil Spray SPF 30 for Skin & Hair. The water-resistant formula doesn’t just defend your scalp and hair from UV rays, it also protects them against salt water and chlorine, making it a perfect companion for your resort holiday.
2. Around the eyes
It is easy, and almost natural, to smear sunscreen all over our face. But many of us miss the eye contours while we do so. The skin around of eyes is very delicate and you have to protect it from the sun too.
Try: Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective White Dark Circle Perfector SPF30. This sunscreen is lightweight and is specifically designed for the eye area. It is also slightly tinted to offer some concealing benefits to the eye contours.
In a study published in The Skin Cancer Foundation Journal in 2007, researchers discovered that a huge amount of skin cancer are found on the ears. Our ears are not clothed and are shaped and positioned such that they’re highly exposed to damaging UV rays. So, don’t neglect them!
Try: Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Sunscreen Stick SPF 30. This sunscreen from natural brand, Burt’s Bees, comes in a stick so it can help you to reach the nooks and crannies of your ears. Its formula is also moisturising and soothing, so rest assured that they won’t cause any irritation to your skin.
Our lips don’t produce melanin, which means they can’t protect themselves from UV rays. Remember to apply a lip product with SPF so that your pout is well-protected too.
Try: Shiseido Sun Protection Lip Treatment SPF 35. Besides sun protection, this lip balm also guards lips against environmental aggressors. Its hydrating formula leaves lips feeling soft and comforted.
The lines of our neck are a strong indicator of our actual age, so make sure you take extra care of your neck area. As with skincare products, you should also apply generous amount of sunscreen onto your neck.
Try: Lancome UV Expert XL-Shield. You’ll need a sunscreen with a moisturiser texture for your neck to encourage you to use it. This sunscreen offers a filtering technology that promises to maintain a 12-hour protection against UVB rays (that cause burns) and also long UVA rays (that are responsible for ageing).
