If you’ve ever felt like you can’t pull off using highlighters because you have tanned skin, don’t be! Highlighters aren’t meant just for those with fair to medium skin tones, women of colour or with tanner skin tones can achieve the #highlightonfleek look as well.
The key tip for choosing a highlighter if you have tanner skin is to use a warm-toned highlighter. Avoid using cool toned highlighters (like cool pink, blue, silver), because it may end up making your face look ashy and it won’t complement tanned skin. And guess what? There are plenty of warm-toned highlighters in the market that you can choose from! Yay!
Gold shades are generally warm toned and it would work best for those with deeper skin tones.
1. Becca x Jaclyn Hill Prosecco Pop
This is available in the Champagne Splits (SGD59) products and in the Limited Edition Jaclyn Hill Face Palette (SGD80)
2. Benefit Sun Beam Liquid Highlighter (SGD46)
3. Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Topaz (SGD58)
Champagne highlighters are not as yellow as gold ones, but they’re still warm-toned. They have a little bit of a peach undertone that’s generally flattering on all skin tones, but more so for those with medium to dark skin.

2. MAC Mineralised Skin Finish in Soft & Gentle
Rose Gold Highlighters
If cool toned pinks won’t work too well for those with tanner skin, try rose gold. Because of its base shade (gold), it makes the highlighter warm enough, without a peachy or gold look to it.
1. NYX Strobe of Genius Palette -The middle bottom shade + top right hand corner (SGD32)
2. Colourpop Highlighter in Avalon (USD8)
Not everyone would want their highlight game to so strong that it ends up blinding others. If you fall under this category, you can still apply highlighter!
1. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder Palette (SGD97)
When first applied, you may feel like there isn’t any difference without it. The effects can only be seen after it has been blended into your skin and in photos and videos. It gives your skin the lit from within look, minus the stark highlight at the highest points of the face, and the shimmer. The palette also comes in three shades that you can mix all together and dust all over the face for an all over glow, or just pick a shade and pop it at the top of your cheekbones and the tip of your nose. This product is the most foolproof one of the lot because it’s so subtle, yet when placed correctly, it will yield amazing results!
