Bold lip colour is for everyone – we’re not kidding! Wearing a bold lip colour is the easiest way to perk up your complexion and amp up an otherwise boring makeup look. And no matter which age bracket you’re in, you could use a sizzling hot bright lipstick in your makeup collection. Here’s how:
If you’re in your 20s
You’re at the best age to try bold colours – the only thing that’ll stop you is your fear of it! Enhance your youthfulness with bright, cheery lip colour; shades like fuchsia and mandarin will brighten your complexion instantly. The trick to pull it off? Mute your eye makeup to let your lips stand out. Also, complement the lip colour with a blusher in the same colour family. In other words, if you’re wearing a coral shade lipstick, brush on a coral tone blusher.
Your Muse: Krystal, lead singer of Korean girl group f(x), flaunts her youthfulness and flawless complexion with a chirpy lip colour. Besides keeping her blusher shade in the same tone, she also keeps her eyeshadow pink to make the look seem more cohesive.
Try: Etude House Liquid Lips (SGD17.90). This comes in many vivid colours and has a velvety texture. You’ll be happy to know that this lip product is also designed to help you achieve the ombre lips look that’s huge in Korea. Read our review of the Etude House Liquid Lips.
If you’re in your 30s
Bold lip colour adds character and is an effortless way to glam up any look. You’re at the perfect age to flaunt your versatility – wear a bold and bright shade for a playful and casual look, or rock a bold and deep colour, if you want to ooze sophistication. The latter is a look that will be more flattering on you now than before – so play it to your advantage! To keep your lip colour looking fresh all day, the trick is to add a dab of clear lip gloss to the centre of your lips. Otherwise, opt for a creamy lipstick that offers a good amount of shine.
Your Muse: Fan Bing Bing, 34-year-old Chinese actress, is often seen walking the red carpet and gracing the covers of magazine with bold and beautiful lip colours. Her vivid lip colour has become a signature look that enhances her glamorous getup.
Try: Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Sheer Shine (SGD33). This is inspired by stained glass and offers pretty and vivid colours while retaining the transparency. Its light and creamy will probably find favour with your lips because of how moisturising it feels. This is available in 12 shades, and will only be available at Shu Uemura counters and boutique from 1 October.
If you’re in your 40s
Bold lips help perk up tired-looking complexion and is an easy way to look polished if you’re time-starved. At this age, invest in classic, timeless shades that you can put on easily. To make sure the colour stays on all day, apply lip liner first, and you’ll be sure that the colour won’t feather too easily.
Your Muse: Hong Kong actress Carina Lau is a great example of how one can age gracefully. You know that she’s not the 20-year-old actress your mother idolises back in the day, but she is no less gorgeous, and looks even more elegant than when she was younger. Would you believe that she’s turning 50 next year? In the red carpet look pictured above, she cleverly picks a timeless red shade that flatters her skin tone.
Try: M.A.C Pro Longwear Lip Pencil (SGD36). These are from the new Vamplify collection that’s launching on 4 September, and offers 12 bold shades you can choose from. In this collection is also the Vamplify lip lacquers (SGD36) that are loaded with dramatic pigments.
More Lips Tips
- If your lips are often dry and flakey, and bold lip colours enhance the dryness, exfoliate your lips first. You can invest in a lip scrub or simply run your toothbrush gently over your lips to get rid of the dry flakes. Next, apply a layer of lip balm and leave it on for at least five minutes. Then, dab off the balm and apply your lip colour.
- Lips thin when we get older. To make your lips look poutier, consider using a lip plumper. Otherwise, you can add a touch of gloss at the centre of your lips, or highlight your cupid’s bow using a dab of highlighter to make your lips look fuller.
- To protect your lips so they won’t look wrinkly as you get older, start taking care of them earlier. Just like your face, it needs sun protection, so look out for lip products with SPF and apply them faithfully.
