Age may be a woman’s best-kept secret, but we often focus only on our face when we think about anti-ageing skincare. Our hands can be an indicator of our age too! The skin on our hands is much thinner than on the rest of our body. It doesn’t help that cell production slows down after we turn 30, and that’s when fine lines start to appear and veins emerge.
Keeping your hands looking young is not as difficult as you might think – in fact, most of us will probably just need to make small adjustments to our current beauty routine! Read on to find out four fool-proof ways to get younger looking hands.
The next time you take sunscreen to your face, just remember to apply some on your hands as well. Sunscreen will protect against age spots and other forms of damage from sun exposure. For better coverage, make sure to use a product that has SPF30 or higher.
Another alternative is applying a hand cream that contains SPF. This will help to moisturise your hands while protecting them from the sun. Since we may wash our hands several times a day, remember to reapply from time to time.
2. Exfoliate and moisturise
Exfoliating and moisturising will get rid of dead skin cells at the surface and help with cell turnover. You can make a homemade scrub with a teaspoon of olive oil and a tablespoon of granulated sugar. Exfoliate once or twice weekly. Alternatively, use your regular facial scrub.
To moisturise your hand more deeply, try creating a night mask using your usual (heavy) moisturising cream. After applying the cream, wrap your hands with plastic cling wrap before putting on cotton gloves. Leave this on overnight and wake up to smooth and supple “baby skin” hands in the morning!
3. Heavy duty protection
Always protect your hands with gloves when cleaning your house or washing the dishes. Cleaning agents may contain harsh chemicals that break down or dry out your skin upon contact. You can rub lotion on your hands before putting on rubber gloves if you use hot water to wash your dishes – the hot water will help it penetrate your skin better.
Besides the skin on your hands, your nails tell a lot too! Discoloured or brittle-looking nails may make your hands look much older than they actually are. Get a lemon wedge and rub the juice on your nails to lighten any stains. If that doesn’t work, you can try soaking your hands in denture cleaner for about 20 minutes to remove the stains. Taking biotin supplements will also help in improving nail strength.
Your manicure matters! Go for manicure styles that make your hands look more youthful, such as shorter nail shapes. Bold polish colours like a true red can also draw attention away from any wrinkles or spots that you’re trying to hide.
