Facials are undoubtedly one of the best ways you can pamper yourself: you get to lie down and relax as your skin gets the ultimate treatment that you may not be able to replicate at home, and then leave the spa feeling refreshed and ready to take on life’s challenges with your glowing skin.

However, some of us can get really addicted to amazing facials that do wonders for our skin. After all, who wouldn’t want to have a trained professional taking care of your skin often if you could afford to?

This begets the question that many of us probably have: exactly how often should we really be getting a facial treatment?

What is the general facial frequency recommended by experts?

If you are looking for a magic number to stick to, you’ll be disappointed to know that there is no hard and fast rule that we can follow, as the ideal period of time between facials is determined by different factors including your skin type, skin issues, lifestyle, age, and environment.

That being said, there is a general guideline that most dermatologists and aestheticians recommend: once per month, or about every three to four weeks.

This number isn’t just plucked out of the air – your skin cell turnover is about 28 days long, meaning that it takes about one month for new cells to grow and dead cells to be removed. Having a facial helps to move the cell turnover process along so that your skin stays clear, clean, and toned.

For those who are experiencing frequent breakouts or tend to have oilier skin, experts generally recommend having a facial more often during your acne flares. Once every two weeks is sufficient to clear your acne and calm your skin down. When the acne goes away, the period of time between facials can be stretched out again.

Can you have too many facials?

Unfortunately, it is true that too much of a good thing can be bad for you. Unless you are following guidelines that are in place to treat a specific issue your skin is experiencing, going for a facial more often than the recommended three to four weeks can actually harm your skin instead!

This is because you are not giving your skin enough time to recover after the treatments, and in some cases excessive facials may stimulate your skin too much causing irritation instead.

If you are doing targeted treatments such as extraction facials and chemical peels too often, it can also lead to excess sebum production and an enlargement of your pores – certainly not something we want from our facials!

For those who are concerned about how much time they should buffer in between certain facial treatments, especially if you have specific skin concerns, you should consult your therapist or dermatologists in order to make an informed decision.

Do at-home face masks or tools work as an alternative to facials?

At this point you may be thinking: one month is a long time, so what can I do in between my monthly facials to keep my skin looking good? Could I use my own face masks and tools to do my own ‘mini’ facials?

The short answer is yes, you can use face masks and at-home tools like a jade roller or dermaroller, but take note that they may not offer the same benefits that a professional treatment does.

In fact, dermatologists highly encourage that you use beauty tools to keep your skin healthy as they can stimulate lymphatic drainage (i.e. speed up the removal of wastes and toxins) and give your skin the daily hydration it needs. They don’t have to be spa-grade products but they should be of good quality so that they will not damage your skin instead.

However, if you have got any sort of skin condition such as acne or rosacea, it is always best to consult a dermatologist rather than take matters into your own hands.
