You may not have flawless-looking, blemish-free skin, but that shouldn’t stop you from wanting to achieve it. With Chinese New Year coming up, these are great tips you can pick up to get yourself prepared for the endless house visits and #CNY Instagram photos. You have one week to get them right.
1. Treat blemishes
While makeup is definitely an important step to creating the appearance of flawless complexion, it is important to treat blemishes at the same time, for obvious reasons. The better your skin really looks, the less makeup you have to apply. Less makeup makes your complexion look fresher and smoother. The goal: to have flawless-looking complexion even without makeup.
Try: Vichy Normaderm Beautifying Anti-Blemish Care (SGD39). This oil-free daily moisturiser contains active ingredients to treat many different skin imperfections, including: visible pores, uneven skin tone, acne scars, dehydration, and skin sensitivity. Clinically proven to even lighten acne scars, this formula is refreshing and leaves skin feeling and looking hydrated but matte. This product, together with the entire new Normaderm range will be available at Derma Center (#02-33 Westgate Mall) and major pharmacies like Watsons, Guardian and Unity.
2. Apply a primer
Often-neglected, a primer is a good way to ensure foundation glides on more easily and your skin has a more even-looking finish. Pick an airy primer that allows your makeup to look fresh, and not so cakey. A good primer can also extend the durability of your foundation.
Try: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer (SGD95). This cult favourite is oil-free and gives a silky texture, so skin is transformed into a smooth canvas for foundation application. At the same time, it helps minimise the appearance of visible pores, fine lines and other imperfections. This is available at Net-A-Porter.
3. Correct your skin’s colour
Our skin tone may sometimes look less ideal because of paleness, dullness, or a yellowish-tinge that makes our complexion look less healthy. A colour corrector makeup base counteracts with the undesirable tone in your skin, so your complexion looks healthier and more lively. If you get this step right, and don’t need to conceal any obvious blemishes, you could even skip the foundation altogether.
Try: For Beloved One Melasleep Brightening Daily Defence Cream (SGD53). In three shades, Lavender, Peach and Rose, these makeup bases brighten dull-looking skin, even out skin tone, and add rosy tone to pale skin respectively. On top of colour correction, it also defend the skin from environmental pollution and retain skin’s moisture so that you can create an effortless nude makeup look. The products are available at Sephora.
4. Get the right foundation shade
The biggest mistake anyone can make with their foundation is choosing one in the wrong shade. The right foundation shade should blend seamlessly into your natural skin tone, such that it doesn’t look like you’re wearing any product at all. If you need help, check with a beauty advisor at the counter to pick out the right colour for you. Test it along your jawline, instead of on your hand – your face and your hand usually don’t have the same tone.
Try: The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops (SGD29.90). These are a saviour when you have bought the wrong foundation shade, or you have found a foundation that applies like a dream, but only has a colour that’s close enough but not quite there yet. The Shade Adjusting Drops come in two shades: Lightening Drops and Darkening Drops. Each drop from the Lightening Drops turn the foundation half a shade lighter, while one drop from the Darkening Drops make your foundation half a shade darker. They work with most liquid foundation.
5. Add a touch of pastels
Now that you’ve created a flawless-looking canvas, don’t forget to add some colour to enhance the glow. To brighten up your complexion further and give it a healthy look, use pastel shades. The easiest way to pull it off is to wear pastel colours on your eyelids, but you can also consider a pastel lip colour.
Try: Shu Uemura Drawing Crayon (SGD32). These limited edition crayons are launched for Shu Uemura’s Spring/Summer collection, and features 10 pastel hues. These delicate and fresh hues softly dress up your eyes and are easy to blend so you can get creative with them.
