When it comes to applying makeup, most of us try to keep the look as symmetrical as possible – eyeliner winged at the same length, eyebrows arched at the same angle, and eyeshadow evenly blended out on both lids.

However, there is a quirky new trend that is challenging beauty conventions and getting people to do the exact opposite: applying mismatched eyeshadow.

Although the idea of using mismatched eyeshadow can feel a little strange, you will certainly turn heads with this show-stopping look.

How can I pull off mismatched eyeshadow?

While there are really no hard and fast rules to mismatching your eyeshadows, you can certainly take inspiration from makeup junkies who absolutely nailed this trend.

1. Apply a white base, then top it off with gloss

Since you are already trying an unconventional beauty trend, you might as well go all-in, right?

In order to create the loudest, most eye-catching mismatched look, you need to make sure that the eyeshadow you use gives an intense colour payoff. If you don’t have any that will seal the deal, that’s okay: all you need to do is apply a base of white cream shadow to your lids before topping it off with multiple layers of the brightest eyeshadows you can find.

Want to really highlight your gorgeous new eye look? Just add a little extra shine by tapping on a layer of face gloss. Alternatively, you can opt to use liquid eyeshadows on your lids instead of powder ones.

2. Use shades from the same family for a seamless look

We know, some of us may still be a little hesitant about heading out with shocking eyeshadow colours, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have at a go at this trend.

If you prefer a more muted look, you can create a hazy rainbow by making sure that all the eyeshadow shades you use are complementary, so that it looks more harmonious than it is haphazard. Remember to blend out the colours so that they do not come off too intense, while gently overlapping the other shades to look as seamless as possible.

This actually looks so wearable and gorgeous, you could definitely attempt this everyday!

3. Go bold with contrasting colours

For those who really want to stand out from the crowd, skip the complementing colours and pick two very different shades to apply on your lids. It’s a bold beauty statement that anyone can pull off, as long as they have enough confidence.

However, remember to use eyeshadow shades that look good on your skin tone!

As an example, if you have warm undertones, don’t reach for the cool, blue shade just because you think it looks pretty. It is recommended that you apply warm colours like olive green and brick red instead, which complement your skin tone and look better on your skin.

4. Use all the colours of the rainbow

Rainbows never go out of season, because they are so fun and gorgeous to look at.

However, this may be a little tricky for those who are new to using eyeshadow: it requires very good blending skills to make sure that the colours run seamlessly without being blended into one another.

DV Tip: Use brighter hues of each colour to brighten up your eyes, unless you are going for a smokey eye look. Don’t forget to top it off with a glitter eyeliner for the extra oomph factor!

Which palettes are good for creating a mismatched eyeshadow look?
