We love our fragrances. They come in beautiful bottles that make our vanity tables look better, and make a subtle statement about our sense of taste. The only gripe we have – they may smell fantastic right after our first spritz when we are still at home, but by the middle of the day, when we want to make an impression, it can’t be smelt anymore.

If this sounds like what you’re complaining about, you’re on the right article. Read on to see tips and tricks to prolong the staying power of your perfumes, and our top recommendations for long-lasting perfumes among the most recently launched ones.

Understanding fragrances: What makes a perfume last longer?

perfume collection

“Parfum”, “Eau de Parfum (EDP)”, “Eau de Toilette (EDT) ” may be terms you’ve often heard associated with fragrances, but do you know what each of them mean?

The difference among each of them is the level of essential oils present in the perfume. Parfum is the strongest version, with 15-30% of its content consisting of concentrated essence of the fragrance. EDP contains 8-15% of concentration, and EDT has 4-8% of the perfume essence.

While Parfum is the most potent fragrance you can find, they are typically very expensive and not every fragrance that you love come with a parfum version. So if you’re looking for a long-lasting perfume that’s affordable enough for daily wear, between the more accessible EDP and EDT, go for the one with the “EDP” label. An EDP can usually last up to around five hours (compared to EDT, which usually last for three hours or less).

How to make your perfume last longer on you

  • Apply it on your pulse points: Areas that are warmer, such as behind your ears, behind your wrist, at the fold in front of your elbows, behind your knees, are called “pulse points” and are the best places to spray your perfume on. The higher temperature at these areas will help accentuate the scent.
  • Learn the art of layering: If your signature fragrance comes with its shower gel and body lotion, include them into your stash too. Having the same fragrance infused into your skin in different ways lock in the scent so it’ll linger longer on your body.
  • Moisturise your skin: Perfumes stay on moisturised skin for longer. So, if you want your perfume to last all day, do this: after you step out from the shower, moisturise your body with lotion, then spray on your perfume before you get dressed.
