What type of bangs should you get?

If, after all the above considerations, you’re surer than ever that you want to try out this exciting new hairstyle, then make sure you know your face shape and what type of bangs are suitable for you!

Square faces

Eye-grazing bangs

If the width of your cheeks are the same as the width of your jaw, and your jaw is on the angular side, you have a square face. Eye-grazing bangs should ideally be thicker and tapered on the sides, and just slightly wispier in the middle so that the style does not overwhelm your face. The ends of the bangs should be around your eyelashes.

Round faces

Similar to the square faces, round faces have the same cheek width as jaw width, except the jaw is softer and not as angular. Round faces tend to be softer, so an angular style of bangs is more suitable to balance out the look. Cue the side-swept bangs. Make sure they’re cut thick, since wispy bangs aren’t going to contribute to the angles of your face. Straight, blunt-cut bangs are also a no-go because they’re going to emphasise the roundness of your face.

Heart faces

Long, side-swept bangs or wispy, layered bangs

When your forehead is wider than the width of your jaw, and your chin is sharp, you have a heart-shaped face. This also means that your forehead would tend to be bigger than the rest of your face, so the key to cutting bangs here is to balance out the top and bottom halves of your face. Again, straight, blunt-cut bangs should be avoided as these will only put emphasis on your wider forehead.

Longer side-swept bangs help to channel attention to the middle of your face like your eyes and lips, balancing out your face shape. Make sure the longest part of the fringe doesn’t go below your cheekbones, and the shortest shouldn’t be above your eyebrow. Wispy, layered bangs are also good for these face shapes, helping to bring attention to the eyes, away from the pointed chin.

Oval faces

It’s up to you!

If the length of your face is just a bit longer than it is wide, then you probably have an oval face. Luckily, this is not only a common face shape but it’s also the face shape that goes with any type of bangs. However, oval faces might be hard to distinguish from long faces, who have bigger foreheads and with eyes closer to the centre of the face.

If you have an oval face, you are pretty much free to choose any type of bangs you want, but just make sure that you are aware of your hair texture and how it’ll alter the type of bangs you want to go for. You can even go for straight, blunt-cut bangs if you’d like! (Tip: to make blunt bangs look less like a China doll, taper the sides to be longer than the center)

Long faces

Long faces are similar to oval faces, but the length of their face is even longer than the width, compared to ovals. With this face shape, you need to downplay the length of your face by making it appear wider than it really is, which long, side-swept bangs can help to do. Heavy, blunt bangs can also help to shorten the length of your face, balancing out the look.
