“Whitening” is a top concern by Asian women, but don’t for a second mistake it for wanting to assume a skin colour you’re not born with. Skin whitening, or sometimes called “brightening”, is the elevation of the complexion so it looks so radiant it glows. Here are what you should and should not do to achieve skin that will put Snow White to shame.

1. Thou shalt exfoliate

We’ve covered exfoliation quite a bit on Daily Vanity. By now, you should know that it’s one of the most crucial steps in achieving healthy-looking skin. It sloughs dead skin cells that accumulate at the top of your skin away, so that new, radiant skin can be revealed. Are you a new DV reader? If you feel like you’ve been living under a boulder, don’t fret. Check out this article – it has everything you need to know about the art of exfoliating.

2. Thou shalt always, always stick to skincare regime

There’s no secret to a good complexion. The three basic steps of skincare: cleanse, tone, moisturise forms the foundation to good skin. If you have a well thought-out skincare regime, you’re on your way to achieving the perfect look. It may be time-consuming, but it’s worth every bit.

3. Thou shalt not go for sun-tanning

Never underestimate the power of the sun. UV rays are the number 1 cause for uneven complexion, hyper-pigmentation and the appearance of signs of ageing. Thankfully, sunscreen that protects our skin from UVA rays can help. Even if you’re indoors, you should apply an ample amount of sunscreen. And reapply!

4. Thou shalt use the right products

Skincare products are all designed for different skin concerns and types. If brightening is your main concern, go for products that are formulated for this function, that’s also suitable for your skin type. Many beauty counters now come equip with machines that can help test your skin concerns and types, and beauty advisors are able to help you determine yours for free. Make use of these complimentary services to get a better idea of what you should be using.

5. Thou shalt boost your moisture level

moisture

Just like how problems such as fatigue and hunger can be triggered by the lack of water, insufficient moisture in our skin can cause problems like the appearance of fine lines and dull complexion. Invest in a good moisturiser and chances are, your skin will start looking brighter too.

6. Thou shalt use face masks

You should start pampering yourself by feeding your skin with facial masks. This regular indulgence feeds your skin with more nutrients so that it’ll feel more bouncy, get more hydrated, and yes, brighter!

7. Thou shalt eat more strawberries

Strawberries are known to reduce dark spots – thanks to the high amount of vitamin C and folic acid. The former is notable for fighting free radicals, while the latter cell regeneration.

8. Thou shalt eat more probiotic foods

yogurt

Surprised? So are we. According to Live Science, probiotic foods such as kimchi, miso soup and yogurt have the ability to reduce acne and brighten up skin. Include these food in your diet especially if you suffer from skin conditions like rosacea and eczema.

9. Thou shalt step on an acupressure mat

I bet this shocked (pun intended) you. Acupressure mats – made famous (and cool) by the cast of Running Man – do wonders not just for the skin, but our overall health too. Daily usage relieves pain, lowers stress level and improves blood circulation, which can help give you better complexion. Huh, who knew?

10. Thou shalt not sleep late

Our skin repairs itself while we sleep and there are “golden hours” during which the body is at its peak of rejuvenation. Insufficient rest can cause our skin to look tired and dull. So, remember to turn in earlier so you can get enough beauty sleep.
