Cool-toned lipsticks make your teeth look whiter

To better understand cool and warm tones, take a look at the colour wheel above. Warm tones consists of yellow, orange, and red, while cool tones are green, blue, and purple. However in the wonderful world of makeup, this definition is not as clear-cut.
Reds can be both warm-toned and cool-toned. A red colour with orange and yellow tones is a warm red, such as Kat Von D’s Everlasting Lipstick in Outlaw and Mac Cosmetics Retro Matte Lipstick in Dangerous. These warm tones will emphasise any yellowness of the teeth and may not be the most flattering when you want to flash a toothy smile for a photo.

Blue and yellow are complementary (or opposite) colours. As a pair, these two colours would cancel out each other to produce a grayscale colour, such as white or black. Cool-tone lipsticks containing blue tones will thus counteract the yellow of the teeth, making it look whiter and cleaner. Just think of it as a colour-corrector.
“What about matching my skin undertone?” you may ask. While that may be an important consideration when you’re shopping for foundation or even eye shadows, it’s not that big a concern with lip colours.

In fact, picking a lip colour the opposite of your undertone (like a cool-toned red for your warm-toned skin) may help to make your lips really pop and stand out.
