Inspired by the “untamed beauty of the Scottish Highlands”, Jo Malone London has very recently released a collection that draws references to the imagery of misty moors, heather-clad hills, and even the ancient castles that were reclaimed by nature over the lockdown—personally witnessed by some of the perfumers themselves.
With that, they present three novel fragrances: Highland Heather, Melancholy Thistle, and Mallow On The Moor. This collection also sees the return of a crowd favourite from their Wildflowers & Weeds collection, Wild Achillea, to wrap up the set.
Highland Heather
Described as “an amethyst vision captured in a woody scent”, Highland Heather features notes of cypress, heather, amber, and a hint of lavender to emphasise the purple, aromatic appeal so beloved by the bees. The perfumers describe this scent as “fresh” and “elegant”.
Melancholy Thistle
The national flower of Scotland was the first thing Céline Roux, Jo Malone London’s Global Head of Fragrance, gravitated to when creating the collection.
The team harnessed headspace technology to capture the fragrance’s notes of thistle, English ivy, and coolwood—a molecule meant to replicate the smell of moss on wet stone. Melancholy Thistle is described as “bright” and “woody”.
Mallow On The Moor
Inspired by the purple mallow flowers that populate the Scottish moors, Mallow On The Moor boasts a much more floral and sweet scent.
Blended with a hint of roasted oak for that gentle earthiness, this fragrance has notes of violet leaves, mallow and heliotrope, and is referred to as “soft”, “powdery”, and “comforting”.
Wild Achillea
A smell that immediately transports you to wild nature, Wild Achillea encapsulates the brightness and tanginess of its namesake. It is blended with nettle and vetiver—both wild weeds and grass, that offers a sting of earthiness that balances out the bergamot.
