The skin on our face and body are all prone to UV damage, blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, which includes the skin on our breasts. In fact, the skin around our chest area is even thinner than you think, making it all the more important for us to take proper care of it.

Orit Markowitz, M.D., board-certified dermatologist and founder of Optiskin, explained in an interview with HelloGiggles that the skin on our upper chest, which is also known as the décolleté, is very delicate, making it more prone to showing the first signs of ageing.

Furthermore, it is thinner because of the lack of supportive tissue and sebaceous glands, which is why the area is prone to dryness – this could eventually lead to wrinkles when not moisturised regularly.

Types of damage our décolleté is prone to

UV damage

When we wear clothing with plunging necklines and open shirts, we’re upping the risk of sun damage, especially if we don’t slather sunscreen on the area.

Furthermore, ultraviolet (UV) radiation can also lead to discolouration, loss of collagen and elastin, which then leads to fine lines and dryness. Coupled with the weight of our breasts, UV rays can contribute to the formation of an undesirable crease between our boobs.

Sun-damaged skin is also prone to skin cancer because of the amount of sunlight exposure that accumulates over time, leading to the breakdown of dermal collagen.

Acne

From genetics to diet as well as stress, there are various reasons why we get acne on our chest. Pesky spots on these targeted areas usually leads to discolouration and sometimes scarring, so it’s best to prevent them with an exfoliating wash or blemish-busting treatment.
