Skin cancer is one of the top 10 most common cancers that affects men and women in Singapore. It is not surprising since we are located very near the equator where there are more sun rays permeating through the atmosphere as compared to other parts of the world.

While most cancers are unavoidable, skin cancer is probably one that can be prevented to greatly reduce our risk of getting it.

This video, originally shared on upworthy.com, shows us the effect of sun damage to our skin. With our naked eyes, everyone’s skin seems normal. But with a special UV light, you can easily see the skin abnormalities that is hiding below your surface skin.

You may think that pigments appearing under the surface skin is unavoidable. You are wrong. Our editor, Kristen Juliet, did the UV light test while at a La Roche-Posay event and her result shows close to zero skin abnormalities (like the kids you see in the video).

It is possible to protect ourselves from future skin issues just by applying sunscreen religiously like how our editor does. Just ask Wolverine and this 69 years old truck driver if they regretted not putting on sunscreen.

We hope this video will convince you. If you need some recommendations, here are four sunscreens we really like.

IDS Clinic S2 Non-tinted Sunscreen

ids clinic s2 sunscreen

Although it has a high SPF count of 50, this non-chemical sunscreen from IDS Clinic is formulated lightweight – which is different from most high SPF sunscreen that tend to be thick and oily. It is also enhanced with vitamin C, an important antioxidant that helps diffuse free radicals, which is what cause signs of ageing to appear.

Like any sunscreen, you will need to apply it 15 minutes before exposure to sun.

The S2 50ml is available only at IDS Clinic for SGD73. This sunscreen also comes in a tinted formula called S1 (SGD 66) and is also available exclusively at IDS Clinic.

Porcelain Flawless Skin Perfecting Moisturiser

Produced by Porcelain, The Face Spa, the Flawless Skin Perfecting Moisturiser is a non-comedogenic (this means it does not clog your pores), oil-free and paraben-free sunscreen. The SPF level of 20 may not be very high but it’s sufficient if your lifestyle does not expose you to too much sun.

The lightweight formula is easy and light on the skin, which makes it very comfortable to be worn in a climate like Singapore’s. On top of that, it has hydration properties built in it.

The Porcelain Flawless Skin Perfecting Moisturiser 50ml is available only at Porcelain, The Face Spa and Porcelain Aesthetics for SGD165.

ést.lab Sunshield SPF50 by Estetica

With SPF50 protection, this sunscreen cream is light for a cream and comes with non-comedogenic properties. It squeezes out as a white formula but as it warms up against your skin, it turns into a tinted shade that provides light coverage. Did you know it is also the Winner of Best Tinted Moisturizer in The Singapore Women’s Weekly 2014 Best of Beauty Buys?

You can read our full review of the ést.lab Sunshield SPF50 here.

The 30ml SunShield is available at all Estetica outlets and can also be bought online at Estetica’s eshop for SGD72.

La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Dry Touch Gel-Cream

This SPF50+ gel-cream sunscreen is super lightweight and dries quickly. The La Roche Posay thermal Spring Water is also added in the formula to further soothe and calm the skin.

It is fragrant-free, paraben-free, non-comedogenic and oil-free too. The 50ml tube is available at all Guardian stores at SGD49.90.
