Want better skin health? Having lots of sex may help.

This is according to dermatologist, Dr. Harold Lancer, who told Refinery29 that during sex, skin responds by increasing blood flow, heart rate, improved immune system function and producing more antigens (your body’s natural anti-bodies).

He explained that during physical activity (including sex), blood-vessel dilation occurs and “This results in that after-sex glow”, Dr. Lancer says, “Sex makes you radiant”.

He further explains that during sex, the higher level of oxygen in the body helps produce more collagen, elastin and sugar in the skin. The latter helps increase the level of hyaluronic acid in the body, thus strengthening the skin’s matrix, giving it a healthy bounce.

Oxytocin, the hormone that is released during orgasm, may help you sleep better, leading to better skin, Dr. Lancer points out in his book, Younger. On top of this, having regular sex can also help to alleviate stress, and this stress relief can be helpful to soothing acne and inflammation.

Looks like when NARS named its famous blusher “Orgasm”, they weren’t just trying to be cheeky. There’s a link between sex and glowing skin – at least that’s what the doctor’s saying.
