It’s the most wonderful time of the year?

Yes, as far as feasting is concerned – just count the number of dinner parties we’ve attended that feature sumptuous turkeys and cheesy gratins!

And before we know it, Chinese New Year is here, and many of us are going to enjoy more hearty meals with our family and friends and forget about our resolution to lose weight in 2017.

While it’s a great time to catch up with our loved ones, we should also watch our weight. You wouldn’t want to dump out all the beautiful clothes you’ve bought for Chinese New Year after the festive season because they feel too snug on you.

Want to know how to keep your body looking svelte despite the feasting? We ask Dr. Ivan Puah of Amaris B. Clinic for tips and advice. Helmed by Dr. Ivan Puah, Amaris B. Clinic has been specialising in body contouring and sculpting treatments for the last 12 years.

Could you share with us your top tips for maintaining body weight and figure despite the festive feasting?

1. Love all the snacks served during Chinese New Year? Stick to your favourites but cap them to few pieces per snack.

2. Swap sweet carbonated drinks with soda water for that same satisfying, fizzy taste.

3. Use a small bowl instead of a big one when you eat. It’ll trick your mind into eating less.

4. Occupy yourself with conversations or games, rather than sitting on a table full of goodies. Out of sight, out of mind!

5. Wear tighter outfit so you can actually see when your tummy is filled. You’ll know you have to stop when your tummy is showing.

Some of us keep to a strict diet and fitness plan, but why is it that we still see stubborn fat that refuses to go away nonetheless?

Stubborn fat are usually around the abdomen and tummy, and can be caused by genetics. Higher levels of cortisol (stress hormone) in your body can also cause your body to hang on fat.

For those who can’t get rid of stubborn fats despite diet and exercise, what aesthetics treatments can we go for to achieve the results we want?

Aesthetics treatments are able to offer spot contouring and fat reduction at stubborn areas, such as the tummy.

There are several to choose from. Vaser Liposelection (VASERlipo) is one of the most popular procedures. The latest minimally-invasive liposuction technique in the market, it is able to target at unwanted fat cells in desired areas such as the abdomen, hips, back, and even neck.

Amaris B. Clinic also provides the RE:SHAPE Body360 programme to help women achieve their weight and body shape goals. This programme uses the High Intensity Focus Ultrasound (HIFU) technology to achieve fat reduction, and a weight-loss programme consisting of meal replacement I designed, to achieve lasting results.

How should the doctor and patient determine the right treatment to go for?

The doctor should discuss with patients about their needs, expectations, and health condition. For instance, not everyone is a candidate for liposuction; we don’t recommend it if the patient is obese. And fillers and botox are not recommended if the patient is breastfeeding.

The head of Amaris B. Clinic, Dr. Ivan Puah has been practicing aesthetic medicine for more than a decade.
