A top knot bun is off the charts on trend and super easy to achieve. With this look, it is all about getting the right shape with the help of bobby pins and creating volume around the bun. This can also be done with medium-length or short hair, with a prerequisite that your hair is not too layered.

When starting out with this new hair trend, play around with the shape of the bun until you get your desired outcome. Our tip is not to bun your hair too tightly, and experiment with sections of hair. A loose, fluffy and messy bun is the way to go! For beginners, Sazan Hendrix’s YouTube tutorial is straightforward and remarkably effortless to replicate.

2. Wrap Bun

Difficulty: Easy
Time required: ~ 3 minutes

The Wrap Bun is another easy look to pull off on a lazy morning. The trick here is to create an illusion of extra volume by pulling your hair into a flip bun. The finish touch that owns this entire bun-up look is the side sweep of hair across the front. We love how elegant it looks while maintaining an element of casual chic.

DV Tip: To give this look more texture and volume, use a texturising hair spray or volumising dry shampoo. Sea Salt Spray is also a great way to nail this look!

3. Twist Up Bun

Difficulty: Intermediate
Time required: ~ 5 minutes

The Twist Up bun is our favourite for medium-length hair because we know what a pain this length can be, curled up at the ends. We’ve all experienced this “awkward phase” and wrestled with ourselves whether to chop our length off, or bite the bullet and grow it out. Be an expert at this unique bun and you’ll never have that worry again. This versatile look can be worn to a formal event or a casual day out depending on how neat you create it to be, or the accessories you pair it with.

DV Tip: To add an extra oomph to the style, you can create three to four dainty braids before rolling your bun up.

4. Braided Bun

Difficulty: Intermediate
Time required: ~ 5 minutes

The Braided Bun is more suitable for those with thicker and greater volume of hair. This is the perfect hairstyle for a hot summer day, and adding some bright hair accessories will certainly complement the look. Even though we give this an “Intermediate” tag due to it being slightly more tedious to achieve, it’s actually really easy to put together. The braids give your bun a playful element – always essential for day out with girlfriends or on a spontaneous date!

5. Fish Tail Braided Bun

Difficulty: Hard
Time required: 7 – 10 minutes

A variation of the previous three-strand braided bun, the Fish Tail braid transforms your entire look into the epitome of Boho Chic. We confess: this is hard even for hair fanatics who love playing with different hairstyles. However, once you master your fish tail braids, this beautiful and intricate-looking updo is yours to conquer! This tutorial shows you exactly how to do the fish tail braid.

With two fish tail braids at the nape of your neck, simply pin them up with bobby pins in a zig-zag manner. This is exceptionally beautiful for those who have ombre coloured hair.

6. Messy Woven Bun

Difficulty: Intermediate
Time required: ~7 minutes

The Messy Woven bun is creativity at its best. Simple yet intriguing, this style allows you to play around with different materials. You can use a long piece of yarn, lace or ribbon, and tie it around your head like a headband. Next, weave it into a ponytail and bun it up! Don’t worry about it being messy because a messy bun creates greater dimension with your headband interweaving within.

DV Tip: Pin your headband in place at the top and bottom of your bun so that it doesn’t shift around throughout the day.

7. Three Twisted Buns

Difficulty: Easy
Time required: ~3 minutes

This out-of-bed messy bun is our number one choice for an office day look. It is fun, graceful, and so easy to do. All you need to do section your hair into three parts, twist the entire length of hair from roots to ends, and wrap them into a bun. Wala! You are all ready for a busy work day with this fabulous updo.

Psst… a secret just for DV readers, if you twist your hair clockwise, do it counter-clockwise when you wrap it into a bun. Alternate the direction you wrap your bun for a more ‘3D effect’.
