The term “negative space” isn’t new in the beauty arena; it is widely popular in manicures and eyeliner looks.

Negative Space Trend
Just as we thought there aren’t other ways we can utilise the negative space look. Ta-dah! It’s now the hottest hair look you can sport in 2019.

What does “negative space” in hairstyles mean?

Like in manicure and makeup, the negative space trend is all about having a blank area around or between a subject in order to highlight it. For negative-space hair, the hairstylist makes sure that the cut contours the face so the face shape is contoured and features stand out, and in terms of colour, a strong base colour with fewer but more deliberate highlights will help to make the overall choice of colours stand out.

Local hair salons, Mi the Salon and Salon Vim, are the pioneers and advocates of this new trend. Offering the “Negative Space Hair Contouring” service, the two salons say that the look is more low maintenance and versatile, and can help customers achieve a face contouring effect so their face shape looks sharper.

Four colours are recommended for the Negative Space Hair Contouring look: Earthy Lavender, Copper Dawn, Aurora Rose, and Frosty Daylight.

Here’s how it looks before and after for me.

My stylist picked grey-toned highlights for me because it was a colour that she felt suited me and I’ve not tried before. It also helps give me a chic look. The new cut she gave me also contoured my face so it looked slimmer and my features could stand out more.

What I was most surprised about this negative space makeover was that my stylist was able to give me a new look without splashing out a head of bright colour. The result is dramatic without being over-the-top, which makes it a great option for those who have a stricter dress code at work.

I really liked the look because it was easy to style, and gave my limp hair a more voluminous look. Note that I have natural waves in my hair and my stylist straightened it as part of styling.

The colour is very wearable and the look makes me feel confident in almost any occasion I may find myself in. More importantly, it actually makes me look more youthful and chic – which is what most people want to achieve, isn’t it?

If you ask me, I think the negative space trend probably isn’t going to be just a 2019 trend; it’s a versatile look that I think will become a classic that will be relevant for a long time.
