TikTok is back at it again with new beauty trends. This time, they’ve come up with a wild new hairstyle that supposedly flatters all face types – “Octopus hair”.

Does the name sound a bit weird? The reason behind the name is its many choppy layers, which kind of resemble octopus tentacles.

Popular in Japan and Korea, it uses shorter layers on the top to maintain length and volume, while thinner, longer hair remains at the bottom.

Supposedly you don’t need to style it, as airdrying complements this edgy, effortless look. All you might need to do is apply a leave-in product to smooth down frizzy flyaways.

You’ve got to consider your hair texture before getting the Octopus haircut, as it’s supposed to look best on those with naturally smooth or slightly wavy hair.

But does it really flatter all face shapes? We decided to put this viral TikTok haircut to the test on square faces.

Getting the Octopus haircut

When I showed my regular hairstylist the Octopus haircut, he immediately likened it to the “Jellyfish” haircut which was popular a few years ago.

Just looking at it, I can see the similarities between both trendy haircuts, despite the “Octopus hair” being a lot more layered.

My hairstylist shared with me that most of his clients with these types of extremely layered hairstyles would often come back and trim it into a bob cut as they aren’t used to the sudden change and varying lengths.

Still, I was committed to getting the haircut, so I sat down in the salon chair and underwent my transformation.

Octopus Haircut Before and After

Here are the results! While my hairstylist did his best to add many layers to my flat and straight hair, it seems like it didn’t work for me.

From the back, it looks a lot more textured like the “Octopus haircut”, but it seems to look more like the “Jellyfish haircut” from the front due to my lack of volume.

At first, I was disappointed that my hair did not resemble the many cool and edgy Octopus haircuts I saw online. But after living with this haircut for a few weeks, I have a few things I want to mention.

The first thing I want to say is that this is a hairstyle that really doesn’t need to be styled. Even when you’ve just woken up, the poofy bed hair gives it more volume at the back and makes it look styled, making it truly effortless.

Although I wouldn’t recommend it for those with flat and thin hair, I do think it would look good on those with square faces, as it resembles a soft and layered long bob.

So, if you’re thinking of getting the Octopus haircut, you should discuss it with your hairstylist and figure out whether your hair texture would fit this wild style.

Otherwise, you should go ahead and skip this trendy TikTok haircut!
