TikTok is constantly surprising us with methods to reinvent how we apply our makeup, with new hack being brought to light almost every day.

Some of these hacks have been quite useful, like using a white concealer for brighter under-eyes, while others have not produced favourable results (we’re referring to the “perfect lip shade” hack).

The newest TikTok hack that has captured our eyes is the coloured eyeliner hack. It claims to create perfect coloured eyeliner using only two beauty products and a brush. That’s how simple it is.

Here’s how this hack works

TikTok user Monet McMichael posted a video of her coloured eyeliner hack, and it has received almost 35 million views at the time of writing.

You need these three items for the hack: eyeshadow, micellar water, and a brush, preferably an angled one that allows for more precision.

The first step is to dip the tip of the brush into the micellar water before dipping it into the eyeshadow of your choice.

The logic is that you’re almost creating watercolour. But instead of a canvas, you’ll be painting and accentuating your eyes.

We decided to put this TikTok hack to the test!

Putting the hack to the test

To try out the hack, I applied foundation to even out my skin tone and blur my pores, as well as to give the ‘eyeliner’ a better base to cling to.

While I didn’t have micellar water at hand, I had the Biore Perfect Cleansing Water.

I was looking forward to trying out this coloured eyeliner hack as I had recently bought the ColourPop Fade Into Hue palette, which has many beautiful shades that would look great as eyeliner.

For the hack, I picked two shades of eyeshadow: the dark blue shade named Iconic, and the golden hue named Bonus Points.

My idea was to really stress test the hack, to check whether it would work on lighter shades as well as darker colours.

The bold blue colour was very easy to apply and showed up easily, almost as if it really was drawn with an actual colour eyeliner. On the other hand, the yellow wing is almost invisible.

The eyeshadows have about the same colour payoff when applied regularly, so I was quite surprised to see that there was such a stark difference between the two.

It didn’t matter how much I tried to apply the yellow ‘eyeliner’ – it wouldn’t show up. It is possible that lighter shades just do not work with this coloured eyeliner hack.

Nevertheless, I’m quite impressed with the results, as this hack really works well for darker shades. In fact, I’m totally prepared to say goodbye to buying coloured eyeliner altogether.

A quick Google search also revealed that this coloured eyeliner hack isn’t new at all. This is a common tip that has made its rounds for some time now.

The only difference is that instead of micellar water, you can use regular old tap water instead. So, there’s no need to go out and buy one if you don’t have it in your vanity.

Plus, you shouldn’t worry too much about dipping your wet brush into your eyeshadow, as mine was fine when it dried. Still, you can choose to use an older palette if you’re scared of ruining it.

Are you going to try out this coloured eyeliner hack? This is definitely one hack that we can get behind.
