When was the last time you heard the term “pH level” in a practical sense? Unless you’re in a specialised field of work, otherwise, we’re guessing it was during chemistry classes in school. You might regret sleeping through chemistry classes now, because pH level has a lot to do with the health and quality of our skin, apparently.

Here’s a crash course on pH level and its relationship to our skin – just make sure you won’t sleep through this lesson this time!

What does pH level have to do with our skin?

Our skin is the barrier that keeps out the nasties – bacteria, toxins, pollutants, you name it. Skin that is pH-balanced is able to perform its functions at its best. When skin is more acidic, it will appear oilier, and be more susceptible to problems like enlarged pores, blackheads, and acne. On the other hand, when skin is at a higher pH (in other words, it’s more alkaline), it will become dry and sensitive, and be prone to flaking, wrinkles, and sagging.

When the skin is pH-balanced, it performs at a superior level; its protective barrier is optimal, so it is able to keep out UV rays and free radicals, and even prevent moisture loss.

Unfortunately, environmental aggressors like air pollution and UV rays that most of us are exposed to, upset our skin’s pH level, and weaken our skin barrier as a result. But as long as we don’t get our skin’s pH level balanced, we won’t be able to see any improvement to our skin, no matter what we do.

How to stabilise our skin’s pH?

Just as your body needs minerals to achieve health, your skin, being the largest organ of your body also needs a variety of minerals to perform. Skin that is not pH-balanced are lacking in minerals; infuse it with minerals and you’ll find your skin’s pH balancing and your complexion looking better.

Where can we find this fountain of youth?

85 years ago, Dr. Haller, a French doctor from the town of Vichy in France discovered a water source from the Auvergne volcanoes of France, which contains one of the richest mineral waters in France. Now known as the Vichy pH Balancing Thermal Water, this has been found to be a rare ingredient that can re-balance skin’s pH level.

Why is it able to do so? Further studies later show that the Vichy Thermal Water contains 15 rare minerals such as iron, potassium, and calcium, which helps to replenish minerals that our skin lose on a daily basis through perspiration and desquamation (shedding of outermost layer of skin).

Today, the Vichy Thermal Water is still sourced from the same location in France. Thankfully, you don’t have to travel all the way to France for it. It is found at the heart of all Vichy skincare formulations. But to really reap the full benefits of the Vichy Thermal Water, we recommend these products that contain the thermal water in very high levels.
