If you’ve been following the latest conversations around weight loss, you’ve probably heard plenty about GLP-1 medications. These prescription treatments have transformed the way doctors approach weight management, helping many people achieve significant weight loss.
But here’s something many people don’t realise: reaching your target weight doesn’t always mean achieving the body shape you envisioned.
Even after successful weight loss, it’s common for stubborn pockets of fat to remain in areas such as the abdomen, love handles or thighs. These areas often resist diet, exercise and even medical weight-loss treatments.
That’s where body contouring comes in: not as a replacement for weight management, but as the finishing touch that helps refine your body contours.

To better understand how body contouring fits into today’s weight-loss journey, we spoke with Dr Terence Tan from Halley Body Slimming Clinic about the role of CoolSculpting Elite and why it remains relevant in the GLP-1 era.

Weight Loss vs Body Contouring: What’s the Difference?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that weight loss and body contouring are interchangeable.
According to Dr Tan, they actually serve very different purposes.
“Weight loss may not be able to achieve the effects of having a good body contour, especially if you’re looking to reduce very specific areas.”

GLP-1 medications work by helping people lose body fat overall. However, they cannot determine where the body loses fat. Some stubborn fat deposits may remain even after significant weight loss, while other areas slim down first.
The same challenge exists with conventional weight loss methods. While diet and exercise help reduce overall body fat, they cannot selectively target fat in specific areas — a concept commonly referred to as “spot reduction”.
This is where body contouring treatments such as CoolSculpting Elite serve a different purpose.
Rather than helping patients lose more weight, body contouring focuses on reducing localised pockets of stubborn fat that remain despite healthy lifestyle habits or successful weight management.
In other words, body contouring isn’t meant to replace diet, exercise or medically supervised weight-loss programmes. Instead, it complements them by helping refine body proportions once overall weight-loss goals have been achieved.
What Is CoolSculpting Elite?

CoolSculpting Elite uses a technology known as cryolipolysis, more commonly known as “fat-freezing”.
“Fat cells are more susceptible to cold than surrounding tissues,” explains Dr Tan.
During treatment, precisely controlled cooling temperatures of around -9°C to -10°C freeze targeted fat cells while leaving the surrounding skin and tissues largely unaffected.
Over the following weeks and months, the body naturally breaks down and eliminates these treated fat cells through its normal metabolic processes. Because this happens gradually, results develop progressively rather than overnight.
CoolSculpting Elite can be used to treat several areas of the body, including:
- Abdomen
- Flanks (love handles)
- Thighs
- Upper arms
- Back fat
- Under the chin
A consultation with a medical doctor is essential to determine whether you’re a suitable candidate and to develop a personalised treatment plan based on your body goals.
Can CoolSculpting Elite Complement GLP-1 Weight Loss?
As more people turn to GLP-1 medications for weight management, doctors are increasingly seeing patients who are happy with the number on the scale, but still wish certain areas looked slimmer or more proportionate.
According to Dr Tan, this is where body contouring may have a role.
“GLP-1 helps patients lose weight overall, but it doesn’t allow us to choose where the fat comes off.”
For patients who have already achieved significant weight loss, CoolSculpting Elite may help address stubborn pockets of fat that remain in specific areas, creating a more balanced body contour.
Dr Tan emphasises that the treatment isn’t about chasing a lower number on the weighing scale.
“It’s not about losing more weight. It’s about refining the body contouring results.”
What Makes CoolSculpting Elite Different?
CoolSculpting Elite builds upon the original CoolSculpting platform with several enhancements designed to improve both treatment efficiency and patient comfort.
One of the biggest upgrades is its redesigned C-shaped applicators, which better conform to the body’s natural curves. This allows for more customised treatment across a wider variety of body areas, and even better comfort.
The system also features dual applicators, enabling two treatment areas to be treated simultaneously. For patients targeting multiple areas, this can significantly reduce the overall treatment time by half.
The updated design in Elite also improves contact with skin, allowing the machine to freeze fat cells with minimal pressure, which optimises safety and comfort.
Together, these enhancements make CoolSculpting Elite a more versatile and convenient option, particularly for busy professionals looking for a non-surgical body contouring treatment that fits into their schedules.
Important Questions to Ask Before Any Fat-Freezing Treatment
With more clinics — and even beauty salons — advertising “fat-freezing” treatments, consumers may assume that all technologies work in the same way.
Dr Tan encourages patients to look beyond marketing claims.
Before proceeding with any treatment, he recommends asking questions such as:
- Is the treatment performed under medical supervision?
- Is the technology clinically studied?
- Is the device FDA-cleared?
- Am I a suitable candidate?
- What results are realistic for my body?
- What are the possible side effects?
- How many sessions might I need?
- What is the overall cost of treatment?
“Currently, CoolSculpting is the only FDA-cleared cryolipolysis (fat-freezing) treatment,” shares Dr Tan.
A thorough consultation should also include an assessment of your medical history, body goals and expectations to ensure the treatment is suitable for you.
A Treatment That Fits Into Busy Lifestyles
One reason body contouring remains popular among working professionals is its convenience.
Because CoolSculpting Elite is a non-surgical treatment, sessions can often be scheduled during the workday, and patients are generally able to return to their normal activities afterwards without significant downtime.
For many people, this makes it easier to fit body contouring into an otherwise busy lifestyle.
What It Was Actually Like to Experience CoolSculpting Elite

To better understand the treatment experience, I visited Halley Body Slimming Clinic to undergo a CoolSculpting Elite session myself.
Before treatment, Dr Tan conducted a consultation to determine whether I was a suitable candidate and discussed which areas would best align with my body goals.
Once the applicator was placed over the treatment area, I experienced a gentle suction sensation followed by an intense feeling of cold.
I had expected the freezing sensation to be uncomfortable, but it was surprisingly tolerable. The intense cold lasted only for the first few minutes before the area gradually became numb.
Once the applicator was in place, there wasn’t much else to do. I spent most of the session catching up on emails, reading and simply relaxing while the clinical team checked in periodically.
After the treatment, the applicator was removed and the treated area was briefly massaged as part of the standard protocol. I then headed straight back to the rest of my day.
Apart from some temporary numbness — which Dr Tan had already explained was a normal part of the recovery process — I was able to resume my usual activities immediately.
As results typically develop gradually over the following weeks and months, it’s still too early for me to comment on my final outcome. However, having done CoolSculpting before with the previous generation of machine, I find that my experience took less time to achieve and was also more comfortable than before.
The Bottom Line
The rise of GLP-1 medications has undoubtedly changed the conversation around weight loss, but it hasn’t replaced the role of body contouring.
According to Dr Tan, the two approaches address different goals. While weight management focuses on reducing overall body fat, body contouring helps refine stubborn areas that may persist despite successful weight loss.
For suitable candidates, CoolSculpting Elite can therefore complement — not compete with — a healthy lifestyle or medically supervised weight-loss programme, helping patients achieve a more balanced body contour.
As Dr Tan puts it:
“The goal isn’t perfection. It’s helping patients achieve improvements that complement the healthy habits they’ve already built and allow them to feel more confident in their own bodies.”
