The Health Science Authority (HSA) in Singapore has warned against the use of Euzema Confidence Revival Cream for eczema after it was found to have contained high levels of toxic substances that can cause adverse effects on health.

The substances found were arsenic, betamethasone, and salicylic acid. One user had reportedly developed a skin reaction called purpura, which was suspected to be caused by realgar, a mineral containing arsenic that was labelled on the cream.

Tests revealed that the cream contained over 430 times the allowed limits of arsenic, a toxic heavy metal.

Exposure to this ingredient can result in various skin issues such as skin rashes, blisters, and peeling due to contact dermatitis. If products containing high levels of arsenic are used frequently and over extended periods of time, it could lead to arsenic poisoning.

They found that the cream contained high levels of betamethasone, a potent steroid, and salicylic acid, a chemical exfoliant that could lead to dry, irritated and red skin if used in high amounts.

It was also indicated that betamethasone should be used only under strict medical supervision as it can have serious adverse effects if used inappropriately.

Long-term use of steroids can suppress the body’s natural steroid production and sudden stopping without medical supervision can lead to adrenal insufficiency that has serious withdrawal symptoms.

HSA advised those who have used the cream to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Sellers Assisting With Investigations

HSA has collaborated with local platform administrators to remove the affected listings, and investigations are underway with the cooperation of two sellers.

The agency has also alerted the relevant Malaysian authorities as these products were labelled as being manufactured in Malaysia and sold by Malaysian-based sellers or websites.

All sellers and suppliers are required to cease selling these products immediately. HSA emphasizes that strict enforcement actions will be taken against anyone found selling or supplying products that are adulterated with banned substances or potent ingredients.

Sellers and suppliers can face prosecution and, upon conviction, may be subject to imprisonment for up to two years, a fine of up to S$10,000, or both.
