When it comes to plastic surgery in the Korean entertainment world, most celebs stay pretty quiet. Not Lee Se Young.

The comedian and actress recently opened up about a chest filler mishap that was equal parts painful and absurd – and true to form, she turned the whole ordeal into comedy gold. But behind the laughs is a bigger story about body image, internet trolls, and what it really costs to feel good in your own skin.

Who Is Lee Se Young?

If you’ve been on the internet long enough, chances are you’ve seen Lee Se Young without even realising it. A viral clip of her exaggerated “auntie smile” became a global meme, but behind the jokes is a veteran entertainer who’s been in the game since her teens.

Best known for roles in Reply 1998 and SNL Korea, Se Young carved a niche for herself with her fearless, over-the-top comedy and zero-filter honesty.

Despite her success, Se Young was repeatedly targeted by netizens for her appearance – particularly her small frame and flat chest. The online trolling was harsh and relentless. After years of enduring this, she decided to take matters (and a surgeon’s scalpel) into her own hands.

Se Young underwent multiple cosmetic procedures and spent a reported 100 Million Won (~S$92k) on them. That included double eyelid surgery, a nose job, and breast fillers that brought her from an A to a D cup. She even compared the total cost to a Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Things were finally shaping up after her breast fillers gave her the curves she’d always felt were missing. That is, until a tragic date with a gym barbell turned her cosmetic upgrade into a medical emergency.

While working out, Se Young accidentally dropped a barbell on her chest. The impact caused one of her breast fillers to rupture, leaving her with what she described as a “collapsed” boob. She had to tightly bind her chest in public until she could undergo emergency corrective surgery.

The situation was so severe that doctors had to cut her open and scrape the fillers out. She later opted for implants instead of fillers, finding the results more stable and satisfying. As always, she told the story with humour – proving that even in vulnerability, she’s still a comedian at heart.

Lee Se Young’s openness about her plastic surgery journey, mishaps and all, adds a refreshing level of honesty to the world of Korean entertainment. It’s real, relatable, and in true Se Young fashion, kind of hilarious.

Beauty, Bravery, and the Business of Being Real

Lee Se Young is not glamorising plastic surgery – she’s telling it like it is, down to the complications and the cost. And in doing so, she’s making space for a more honest convo about self-image, especially in the often brutal K-entertainment world.

Her story is part cautionary tale, part comeback arc, and fully relatable for anyone who’s ever stared in the mirror and wanted just a little more.
