Whether or not you believe in geomancy (feng shui), it’s always a little fun to find out what colours can bump up your luck in the New Year!

We all want to leave the negative energy and bad luck behind us, and what better way to do so than usher in 2023 by injecting a few auspicious colours into our outfits and makeup looks?

If you’re unsure where to start, well… you’re in luck (pun fully intended).

Singaporean Feng Shui Master, Master Alvin Sai of MZ玄 Fengshui Mastery, shares the lucky colours to reach for according to our zodiac sign. It also presents the perfect opportunity to weave these colours into our Lunar New Year looks!

Rat: Black, orange, and purple

You might think that a warm-toned colour like orange will clash with a cool tone like purple, but you’d be surprised.

Pairing these two colours together reminds us of a “golden hour” sunset. The warmth from the orange and purple’s coolness makes for a well-balanced look.

Reach for an eyeshadow palette like ColourPop In A Trance eyeshadow palette (S$19.33) that features baby lilac shades. You’ll get matte finishes as well as chrome and pressed glitters so you can experiment with flashier looks.

For the lippie, we’re thinking of a soft gradient that allows your eye makeup to transition nicely to your pout. Gucci Rouge De Beaute Brillant Lipstick in shade #307 Louise Orange (S$60) is an alluring muted orange. Dab the lippie on the centre of your lips and blend it out to create a seamless gradient.

Ox: Beige, white, and green

If you’ve never played with green eyeshadow, now’s the time to do so!

Sweep a beige eyeshadow over your lid as a base. Afterwards, take a dense brush and dab some green eyeshadow along your upper eyelid for a subtle yet flattering splash of colour.

A palette that has everything you need would be the Kose Visee Fragrance Free Riche Glossy Rich Eyeshadow in version GR-7 (S$27.17). Mix the greens and beige for a gorgeous blend.

To tie everything together, try replacing your usual black or brown eyeliner with NYX Professional Makeup Epic Wear Long Lasting Liner Stick in shade Pure White (S$12) for a graphic look.

Tiger: Black, pink, and beige

(2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950, and 1938)

One can never go wrong with pink eyeshadow. A simple palette like the Morphe 9P Petal Passion Artistry Palette (S$21.50) has shades of peachy pink, rose, and mauve in matte and shimmery finishes to create a sweet look for your eyes.

Top it off with sleek “cat eyes” using the KissMe Heroine Make Smooth Liquid Eyeliner in shade #01 Super Black (S$15.34).

Rabbit: Blue, purple, and orange

(2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951, 1939, and 1927)

While your lucky colours are similar to those born in the Year of the Rat, we’re thinking of a more striking style for you.

Play around with coloured eyeliners and try the FLOWFUSHI UZU Eye Opening Liner in Orange (S$28) which is sure to draw attention to your eyes.

The bright orange of the eyeliner will pair well with a blue eyeshadow like the Sephora Collection Colorful Magnetic Eyeshadow in shade #17 Lunar Eclipse (S$15). The eyeshadow also packs a lustrous shine so you’re sure to dazzle.

If you aren’t one for eyeshadows, reach for a bold berry lippie instead. We think the Pat McGrath Labs MatteTrance Lipstick in shade Deep Orchid (S$62) has a rich hue that will make your look extra sultry.

Dragon: Green, red, and beige

(2012, 2000, 1988, 1976,  1964, and 1952)

Pairing green and red for your eye makeup might sound like a bad idea at first, but they actually complement each other.

Ease your way into green shades with the Pixi Eye Effects Eye Shadow Palette in variation Hazelnut Haze (S$38). This palette includes muted greens that are neutral enough to pair with the splash of red you’re about to swipe on.

Instead of grabbing red eyeshadow, swipe on some red mascara. Maroon lashes will naturally open your eyes while subtly complementing the green eyeshadow. The mascara we have in mind is the iconic Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes in shade Dream Pop (S$48) which has a deep red hue.

Snake: Pink, orange, and white

(2013, 2001, 1989, 1977, 1965, and 1953)

A field of blooming flowers comes to mind when we see your lucky colours together. We think you should go all out to show your vibrant colours this year.

Swipe on the Rare Beauty Stay Vulnerable Liquid Eyeshadow in shade Nearly Apricot (S$33). Its bright peach colour is sure to make your eyes pop.

Pick a white eyeliner like Dior Diorshow On Stage Liner Waterproof Felt Tip Liquid Eyeliner in shade 001 Matte White (S$52) and glide it across your upper eyelid. Don’t be afraid of lining your lower lash line too! This can help brighten your eyes.

Dress your lips with Peripera Ink Airy Velvet tint in shade 14 Rosy Pink (S$9.90). As the name suggests, it has a rosy pink hue that will make your pout extra kissable while complementing your vibrant eye look.

Horse: White, black, and grey

(2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966, 1954, and 1942)

Compared to the other zodiac signs, your colour scheme is more monochrome, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring.

The best part about playing around with shades like black and grey is that you can make use of sparkles and glitters to brighten things up.

Dab on some e.l.f. Liquid Glitter Eyeshadow in shade Black Magic (S$12.27) onto your upper eyelid. Make sure to grab a brush and blend everything out so you won’t get patchy panda eyes.

For your lower eyelid and the inner corner of your eyes, sweep on some Jill Stuart Jelly Eye Color in shade 01 Diamond Snow (S$16). The sparkle this eyeshadow packs will accentuate your eyes and liven up the entire look.

Goat: Blue, pink, and orange

(2015, 2003, 1991, 1979, 1967, 1955, and 1943)

A colour scheme like this calls for a look jam-packed with pastel hues. A cool-toned eyeshadow like blue can brighten your eyes and neutralise and sallow tones on the lids.

Dust some blue pigment on your eyelid as a base before sweeping the pink pigment over it. Flower Knows Strawberry Rococo Series Five-Color Eyeshadow Palette in 05 Creamy Macarons (S$43.20) even has an icy blue shade to highlight your inner eye corner with.

To top it off, accentuate your pout with Amuse Dewy Lip Tint in shade 09 Seoul Soul (S$36). You’ll get a high-shine finish that enhances the bright hues of orange and pink.

Monkey: Blue, white, and grey

(2016, 2004, 1992, 1980, 1968, and 1956)

Chic and classy is the vibe we’re getting from your lucky colours. A cool-tone shade like blue mixed with monochromes like white and grey reminds us of a winter wonderland.

Shimmers and glitters are the way to go, and your cheekbones will pop with Fenty Beauty Liquid Killawatt Fluid Freestyle Highlighter in shade 01 Sidechick (S$42).

Ease into blue eyeshadows with the Judydoll 20 Colors Eyeshadow Palette (S$34.45). Shades like “shell”, “paradise”, “salt”, and “hutt lagoon” will give you a soft blue eye look.

Rooster: Yellow, white, and green

(2017, 2005, 1993, 1981, 1969, 1957, 1945)

A cute ’90s-inspired look blooms from this combination of colours.

Yellow and green tend to be colours that we shy away from but trust us when we say the Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Pro Pigment Palette Vol. 2 (S$56) makes it easy to take them on.

Try sweeping the yellow shade over your eyelids before dabbing the green shadow onto the inner corner of your eye.

If you’re looking to play with graphic liners instead, reach for the 3INA Makeup The Colour Pen Eyeliner in shade 137 (S$23.50), a mustard yellow shade, and the Sephora collection Intense Ink Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in shade 06 Satin Forest Green (S$17.60) that takes on a rich green hue.

Dog: Pink, grey, and green

Keep your eye look simple and illuminate the rest of your face with a splash of colour.

If you struggle with redness on your skin, tone down the saturation with a green highlighter like Cezanne Pearl Glow Highlight in shade 03 Aurora Mint (S$11.90).

Put a fun twist to your makeup routine by stamping on some pink blush with the Kaja Cheeky Stamp in shade 04 Feisty (S$35.64). The sheer and buildable formula will give your cheeks a seamless rosy flush.

Top everything off with grey eyeshadow and spread on The Face Shop fmgt Metallic Liquid Eyeshadow in shade 01 Flash Sequins (S$17.21). A shimmery eyeshadow look with silver speckles is the perfect way to complement this blend of lucky colours.

Pig: Beige, green, and grey

(2019, 2007, 1995, 1983, 1971, 1959, 1947)

You’ll want an eye look that amps up the “wow” factor. Try ColourPop Jelly Much Shadow in shade Drama Szn and Heartthrob (S$12.48 each).

We suggest you apply the grey, shimmery Drama Szn in the inner corners of your eye and paint the rest of the eyelid in the shade Heartthrob, a pretty lime green hue.

You can finish everything off with a beige eyeliner like the Bbi@ Last Auto Gel Eyeliner in shade 12 Creme Beige (S$10.23). This liner has a creamy, matte formula that will balance out the shimmers of your bold, chromatic eyeshadows.
