Why it’s important to know the difference between UVA and UVB rays

More and more people are appreciating the importance of protecting their skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays emitted from the sun, but did you know that there are two different types of UV rays that affect our skin differently?

Of the UV rays that do reach us, the majority are in the form of ultraviolet-A (UVA) rays, while the remainder are shorter-wavelength ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays.

UVB rays reach the top layer of our skin, which is why we experience sunburns. Meanwhile, UVA rays encourage the body to produce melanin – this is how we develop a tan over time.

However, you have to keep an eye out for UVA rays as they can also cause oxidative stress and cellular skin damage, also known as photoageing. These rays are responsible for almost 80% of visible skin ageing (think wrinkles and dark spots), and long-term exposure can even result in skin cancer.

It’s also worth noting that UVA radiation can penetrate through windows and even heavy clouds. This is why it’s important to wear sunscreen every day, even if you’re not in direct sunlight.

To keep your skin protected daily, I recommend incorporating Shiseido Global Suncare The Perfect Protector or Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk into your skincare routine. Both are lightweight options that boast SPF50+ PA++++ to shield your complexion from sun damage.

The Shiseido Global Suncare The Perfect Protector taps on Shiseido’s WetForce Technology and is bolstered by HeatForce Technology. Together, they form SynchroShield, an invisible, lightweight protective veil that’s strengthened by heat and water.

I love how silky the sunscreen is too. It goes on clear and rubs in easily without leaving a greasy residue on the skin – great for both the face and body.

The Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk, on the other hand, is developed with Auto Booster Technology that allows the sunscreen to be strengthened when in contact with sweat, water, heat, and humidity – perfect for our humid climate!

It protects my skin against harmful UV rays and is also formulated with 50% skincare ingredients that moisturise and plump the skin. I also adore the fact that it’s partially packaged with sustainable bio-based plastic, so it’s not only great for the skin but also for the earth.
