Hair is a lady’s crowning glory and a haircut can pretty much determine how we feel for the next few months. A bad one can send us into a complete frenzy as we scramble to Google ways to salvage it (DIY bangs, anyone?), whereas a good one means we look great and feel even better. In Singapore, there’s a plethora of hair salons and we are definitely spoilt for choice.

We compare four popular hair salons so you can choose and decide for yourself which you think is the best:

1. Jean Yip

It’s really hard not to spot homegrown brand, Jean Yip, because it’s literally everywhere. One of their featured services is the Super Shine Hair Treatment. It involves the use of Nano Keratin technology in both perming and rebonding. The nano-sized keratin allows hair to absorb protein easily for strength, shine and movement.

Price: From S$53.50 onwards for a ladies’ hair cut to S$250 for a keratin treatment.

What clients say: According to most online reviews, service seems to leave much to be desired but these reviews are rather old. The salon has been engaging bloggers recently and they appeared to have improved quite a bit.

Outlets: 26 outlets, including Tampines, Plaza Singapura, Jurong Point, and Causeway Point.

Extra: Besides hair, Jean Yip also does face and body treatments, and nail care.

2. Kimage Hair Studios

Another local brand, Kimage has come a long way since 1994. The salon believes that an individual’s personality can be reflected through his/ her hairstyle. There are currently 10 outlets and three additional ones under the “Prestige” label where senior stylists will attend to your mane.

Price: From S$40 for a style + shampoo and blow to S$400 for a Steam Bond (straightening, including a haircut).

What clients say: Great quality and service for the prices paid, especially those done at Plaza Singapura.

Outlets: 10, including Kovan, Toa Payoh, and Bukit Panjang Plaza.

Extra: Kimage has a School of Hairdressing at Funan IT Mall where you can get haircuts for SGD6 and hair treatments for SGD20+. The only catch is that these are done by trainee hairdressers but fret not, because trained hairdressers are there to supervise them!

3. Shunji Matsuo

Shunji Matsuo is another popular Japanese hair salon, especially among bloggers. Set up by the late Shunji Matsuo who worked in Japan, Europe and the United States, the salon hopes to reflect each customer’s creativity and personality through a hairstyle that also caters to his/her lifestyle.

The salon recently bagged the Best Salon for Japanese Cut as well as Best Stylist awards in the Daily Vanity Spa & Hair Awards 2020. With a niche cutting technique and an award-winning hairdresser in tow, you can rest assured that your crowning glory is in perfectly good hands when you visit Shunji Matsuo.

Psst… Be the first 50 customers to book the Japanese Cut and you’ll get a Shiseido scalp treatment plus a special Shunji Matsuo welcome pack for free. Alternatively, be among the first 10 customers to book a haircut by award-winning stylist Justin Javier and you’ll enjoy it free together with a Shunji Matsuo welcome pack! Other customers are entitled to 20% discount and a complimentary Shunji Matsuo welcome pack.

Price: From S$50 onwards for a ladies’ hair cut to S$267 for straightening.

What clients say: Great colouring jobs and services, though you need to know which stylist to pick. Tip: Check out their sponsored bloggers’ reviews for discounts!

Outlets: 5, including Tampines, Ngee Ann City, and JEM.

4. Salon Vim by Chez Vous

Salon Vim is one of the five salons in Singapore that has been made a flagship store of L’Oreal Professional. They collaborate frequently with well-established bloggers who always leave the salon with perfectly coiffed hair and raving reviews. They are known for their vibrant colouring jobs, and hair treatments.

Price: From S$53.50 onwards for a ladies’ hair cut to S$250 for a keratin treatment.

What clients say: Customers were mostly satisfied with their colouring jobs, but the quality of other hair services seem to vary quite a bit, depending on the stylist you get, and not quite worth the price. Again, quote your favourite blogger’s name for discounts!

Outlets: Only 1 at Wisma Atria.

Extra: Salon Vim also offers various hair treatments, including a revitalizing Ginseng one.
