10 tips to help you achieve Instagram-worthy hair that screams #hairgoals

We want to be that girl whom everyone looks up to as #hairgoals. They are usually seen on Instagram with gorgeous hair that glides down their back, short but chic cuts that brings out their cheekbones, or beautiful colours that complement their skin tone. In this comprehensive hair guide, we compile ten tips for you to step up your hair game. Here’s everything you need to know, from freshening up your hair to taking a good picture, for Instagram-worthy hair:

Tips about your hair:

1. Use dry shampoo for volume and freshness

Dry shampoo isn’t very popular in Singapore as compared to Western countries, but it is an amazing product. If your hair roots are getting greasy at the end of the day or you are too lazy have no time to wash your hair, spritz some on your scalp and your hair will look fresh and clean. Lifting up your hair in layers and spraying dry shampoo (as in the picture) will give you extra-voluminous hair.

DV Tip: If you can’t find any dry shampoo, substitute with translucent loose powder from your make-up bag! Dust on small amount with a brush or puff for the same effect as dry shampoo.

2. Deep condition at home

Most of us don’t have time to sit in the salon for hours to get a hair treatment very often. To produce a similar effect as a hair treatment at home, get a deep-conditioning hair product. Slab on the product on freshly washed hair, and put a shower cap over your mane to enhance its effectiveness.

“A shower cap helps trap the heat generated from your scalp, and this heat opens the cuticle, allowing the conditioner to penetrate more deeply,” says Matrix SoColor celebrity stylist George Papanikolas. This trick gives you salon-treated hair at a fraction of the price.

3. Layer on hair ties and bobby pins to give your pony a lift

Stack on your hair ties and use bobby pins to give your ponytail a boosted look. This will support the base of your ponytail and forces it to look fuller and lifted.

4. Get a colour that suits your skin tone

If you have a warm skin tone, warmer hair colours will tend to flatter you. Similarly, cooler colours will complement cool skin tones better. Ask your hairstylist for golden or warm hues for warm skin tones, but go for platinum and mahogany tones if you have a cool skin tone.

Hairstyling tips:

1. Create beautiful curls

Voluminous curls are one of the most popular looks on Instagram. We asked hair expert ghd, who is known for their styling tools, how to get it right in just four steps.

Step 1: Prep dry the hair with a heat protectant spray.
Step 2: Twist the section of hair before wrapping around the barrel of ghd Soft Curl Tong (SGD330). This will create a stronger curl.
Step 3: Twist wrap the hair around the barrel, not releasing grip on the hair. Then close the clamp and hold for 5 – 8 seconds. Repeat technique and work up towards parting.
Step 4: Once curled, comb through using a detangling comb to create a soft movement to your curls.

Top tip: Use a root lift spray in hair when blow-drying for added volume. Hair must be 100% dry when using any electrical tool. Start from the front and sides to allow longer time for the hair to cool and set. Leave hair 10-15 minutes to cool down before brushing into shape, as this will allow the hair to set and will last longer.

2. Tame baby hairs

While you want to look natural, you don’t want to look messy. For this trick, spray some hairspray on a toothbrush and use that to keep your baby hairs where you want them to be. Alternatively, you can use clear eyebrow gel to set them in place.

3. Use a good hairdryer

When blowing your hair dry, make sure to use a high wattage (above 1800 Watts) ceramic/tourmaline dryer. They will give you a smooth and shiny finish and prevent your hair from frizzing up. These dryers are the ones used by professional stylists – now you can achieve blowouts close to what you get at the salon!

Tips about taking the photo:

1. Be in the sun

When taking your photo, stand next to the window for your hair to appear extra shiny and healthy. Alternatively, go outside to make use of natural light. Avoid taking photos in harsh lighting, such as blue light. The right lighting will make your hair look beautiful and natural light is always a safe option.

2. Use a fan or hairdryer

Use this trick for a magazine-cover worthy shot. Set your fan at low speed for a gentle breeze to create a glamorous movement in your hair. Alternatively, use a hairdryer or a handheld fan if you want better control of how your hair flows in the wind. Just remember to keep the fan out of the shot!
