Have you heard of the term “double cleansing”? Are you actually already doing it without realising? Most importantly, is it even good for your skin?
Japanese skincare wisdom has long advocated the benefits of double cleansing, and it has become an integral part of many Japanese women’s daily beauty regimes today. However, we live in a very different climate from Japan, so does it exactly work the same way for our skin types?
We’ve got all the details about double cleansing, whether you should be doing it, and we even have a recommendation on products to start off with!
What is double cleansing?
Double cleansing isn’t so much of a technique – it’s basically using a cleansing oil to remove your makeup, followed by a water-based cleanser to remove the deeper impurities in your skin.
Most of our makeup products are oil-based, which lasts longer on our skin. Oil removes oil, so most makeup removers available on the market nowadays have to contain some form of oil in order to work well.
After the oil cleanser removes all the makeup, grime, and facial sebum off the surface of your skin, your gentler, water-based facial cleanser is able to work better to remove impurities stuck deeper inside your pores. Your face is overall cleaner, healthier, and less acne-prone with less gunk clogging up your pores.
Double cleansing isn’t a new phenomenon either. It’s actually been used in Japanese skincare for centuries. In the distant past, Japanese women used white metal-based makeup as their base foundation, but it was stubborn to remove and thick in nature.
Our modern-day foundations aren’t as unwieldy as they used to be more than a hundred years ago, but the double cleansing method still remains firmly rooted in the precepts of Japanese skincare. It has since spread all across the world because of how thoroughly but gently it is able to remove the last traces of makeup.
Is it suitable for us women in Singapore?
The short answer is: yes, absolutely. Double cleansing works wonders for women with dry skin, more common in colder countries, because it negates the need for using harsh facial cleansers or makeup removers that might dry out the skin even more.
In our hot and humid climate, it’s actually even more useful for us with oily skin because, unlike harsher makeup removers, cleansing oils don’t strip away your natural sebum and worsen our skin’s oil production. In fact, keeping our skin adequately hydrated also means keeping the oil production in check throughout the day.
Leaving traces of makeup on your skin overnight means increasing the chances of clogging up your pores. Just by double cleansing, you’re doing your best to reduce the frequency of getting blackheads and pimples. You end up with cleaner and healthier skin, on which makeup can glide on more smoothly. It’s a win-win situation all around.
Cleansing oils may leave behind a tacky feeling for some, and that’s where the water-based face wash comes in after that, cleaning deeper impurities and leaving your face feeling refreshed, hydrated, and clean.
How do you get started?
If you’re new to double cleansing, and the shelves of cleansing oils and face washes are a bit too overwhelming for you, Atorrege AD+ has the perfect solution for you.
The Atorrege AD+ Double Cleansing Duo is a pair of products that perfectly complement each other for the most thorough double cleansing experience, removing impurities and eliminating clogged pores, leaving you with healthy, glowing skin.

1. Atorrege AD+ Mild Cleansing (0)
How gentle is this makeup remover? Get this – you don’t even need to rub your face. This concentrated gel formula gently dissolves impurities and makeup grime in only 10 seconds, even giving you a mild exfoliation in the process.
Your skin will be cleaner, your pores will be more refined, and your blackheads and comedones will be reduced with this mild cleanser. You just have to pour an appropriate amount onto your dry palms (Atorrege AD+ recommends “about the size of two cherries”), then gently massage on to your T-zone area for about 10 seconds. Rinse off with room temperature, or lukewarm water, and say hello to cleaner, brighter skin!
If dissolving off makeup scares you, you have nothing to worry about. The Mild Cleansing (0) is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive, acne-prone and eczematous skin.
Atorrege AD+ Mild Cleansing (0) retails for SGD 59 (125ml) at secleted Watsons, Guardian and other department stores, and online at BeTime, Lazada, and Qoo10.
2. Atorrege AD+ Face Wash Liquid (1)
This is the second step in your double cleansing routine; this Face Wash Liquid will help to give your face a deeper cleanse after your makeup is removed.
The formula uses weakly acidic nano-cleansing bubbles that is able to penetrate pores more deeply and dislodge impurities that might be clogging it up, which in turn prevents blackheads from forming. Your skin will look clearer and more radiant after some time of using this product! With wet hands and a small amount of Face Wash Liquid, rub in a circular motion on your face to produce a thick lather. Gently massage the lather onto your face – experts recommend at least one minute, or even two if you can – before rinsing away. Your skin will feel clean and supple, not dry or tight!
The Face Wash Liquid is suitable for normal and dry skin, including sensitive skin, acne-prone and eczematous skin.
Atorrege AD+ Face Wash Liquid (1) retails for SGD 59 (150ml) at secleted Watsons, Guardian and other department stores, and online at BeTime, Lazada, and Qoo10.
3. Atorrege AD+ Face Wash Foam (1F)
Prefer a foamier, fluffier texture to your face wash? Atorrege AD+ has you covered too. Their Face Wash Foam works similarly to the Face Wash Liquid, and can also be used as the second step in your double cleansing routine.
It utilises the same technology of weakly acidic nano-cleansing bubbles in order to deep-cleanse your pores, and prevent the formation of blackheads. Stick with this for some time, and you’ll find yourself having healthier-looking skin. You only need three pumps of foam for a good wash.
Remember to use your fingers to give your face a good but gentle massage – it not only removes all the dirt, it also stimulates the blood circulation underneath your skin as well. If you spend so much time putting on your makeup, it makes sense to spend a few more minutes really making sure all of it is removed properly! Don’t forget to clean your neck area too!
The Face Wash Foam is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, acne-prone and eczematous skin.
