How to recreate Blackpink Jennie’s gorgeous magazine cover makeup looks, with tips from a professional makeup artist!

Remember when Blackpink’s Jennie Kim featured on Dazed Korea’s 2021 Holiday Edition last December? Dressed head to toe in Calvin Klein, she awed her fans with her range of ethereal looks – from sultry smokey-eyed makeup paired with tank tops and Calvin briefs to iridescent glitter lids coupled with a black jumper and chunky boots.

Jennie has made triumph after fashion triumph with her stand-out styles and natural beauty, but we’ve never quite seen her looking so beautiful in looks as raw and as ravishing as this before.

This is why we were excited to speak to professional makeup artist Alex T to find out how to best recreate three of Jennie’s makeup looks from Dazed Korea!

Sultry makeup look

This is a look that’s “much sexier than what we are used to from a Korean pop star”, according to Alex, and fans certainly agree. Jennie’s fans were most captivated by this sultry style that Jennie effortlessly owned – everything from her smokey makeup to the sheer tank and black Calvin Klein briefs that she wore in this cover shot.

Tips for wearing the sultry makeup style

Since an irresistible pout and smouldering eyes characterise this look, Alex suggests that you “experiment with an overline on your lip, and go bolder with your eyeliner”, which, to her, means that you should definitely apply a double coat of liner on your lids.

We also can’t deny that Jennie’s warm, glazed skin also looks gorgeous here, which is why bronzing and highlighting is a good way to go. “[It] always adds to the sex appeal”, Alex affirmed.

Fresh-faced K-beauty style

Even a natural beauty like Jennie can benefit from a minimal makeup style, which leaves her looking fresh-faced and beautiful – just as she does in this cover photo! Paired with a pale blue puffer jacket and with her hair swept cleanly out of her fae and into a bun, she looks crisp and natural, as if she had just emerged from white winter snow.

This is a classic K-beauty look but one that’s slightly more understated.

“Her skin is kept fresh with minimal contouring and eyeshadow.” The shade on her lips is more washed out compared to “the usual pop of colour that Koreans lean toward”. Her eyebrows are also softer and straighter, Alex detailed.

As for Jennie’s eyes, they’re drawn onto her lids in a “super-thin line” that’s typical of K-beauty makeup, as well as with baby wings to “keep [the look] as subtle as possible”, whilst “still open[ing] up her eyes”.

Tips for wearing a toned-down Korean look

“This look is about a fresh face with beautiful skin,” Alex notes. And, as with all natural no-makeup makeup styles, clear and flawless skin is the most important element. Duh! Take it from Alex when she says, “Your skin prep is key, so don’t skip on any of your skincare steps!”

Besides skin prep, you can make your skin look fresh and creamy by adding more moisturiser. Alex also suggests carrying oil blotters with you if you don’t want to use powder for your makeup base (which is good for mattifying the skin) so that you can tap away the sheen throughout the day.

Face

Provide light coverage and a dewy finish – that’s what you want your foundation to do for this ‘au natural’ makeup style. Glittery eyes

An edgy take on a Y2K style, Jennie wore luminous glitter eyeshadow on her lids, along with a pair of braids, a black sweater over a collared blouse, high knee-length socks, and chunky boots. It’s a “younger and more fashion-forward look,” Alex observed.

Tips for wearing this glitter-eye style

You’ll need to wear a glitter liquid eyeshadow or an eye gloss on your lids to achieve the translucent shimmer. If you’re using gloss on your eyelids, Alex’s tip is to use just the slightest bit to achieve your desired effect. “Go too heavy and risk ruining your entire eye look!”

You can also accentuate your glitter-eye style by applying your blush high on your cheekbones. “Wear your blush high and in line with your irises for a doll-like effect,” said Alex. She also suggests creating slightly clumpy lashes that’ll add to the look.
