Dealing with forehead oil and acne

Although this might partially be due to our local climate, some people simply have oilier foreheads than others. Bangs, being the type of hair style with hair resting directly on your face all the time, are the most susceptible to soak up your facial oil (and/or sweat), and end up looking like it was plastered down to your skin.

This does not only destroy any work you did in styling your bangs before leaving the house, but also increases the chance of getting forehead acne. This may not be a huge problem if your skin is not extremely oily (especially not the forehead region), or if you happen to work in an air-conditioned environment for most of the day.

Going to the hairdressers more often

When you have long hair, you could probably get away with cutting your hair a few times a year, since the few inches that your hair grows within that time doesn’t make a huge difference to your overall look. That’s not going to be the case with bangs, however.

The shorter your hair is, the more obvious when it grows out even by a little. Bangs have to be regularly trimmed in order to maintain it at a flattering length. If you are going to get bangs, make sure you are prepared to get it trimmed by a trusted hair dresser at least once a month.

Some people opt to trim it themselves to save the costs of going to a hair professional, but we don’t recommend it. After all, bangs are going to be the shop-front display of your hair. It’s not quite the same as trimming your hair ends, because you could simply chop more length off if anything goes wrong. Bangs only afford you a short and limited length to work with, so any mistakes are more obvious, and would be harder to disguise or rectify.

Exaggerating your hair texture

This isn’t the first thing that occur to most people when they think about getting bangs, but it’s actually one of the most important.

Bangs are, after all, still growing out of the same scalp as the other parts of your hair. Not only are bangs going to be the same hair texture as the rest of your hair, it might be an exaggerated form of such. For example,if you have mildly wavy long hair, the waves might be straighter and tamer because of the weight of your hair. Because bangs are so short, the waves are likely to appear more vividly on them than on the rest of your hair.

However, many people have successfully and beautifully pulled off bangs with all kinds of hair texture, so the secret still lies in spending time and effort into experimenting and styling them every day.

The lifestyle you lead

When you consider getting bangs, it’s likely that you’re thinking about how you’d be able to look in it when you’re going out with friends, or going on a holiday. However, since bangs aren’t going to be an one-off affair, and they do take some time to grow out if you decide not to keep them any longer, it’s important to think about every other aspect of your lifestyle and whether it might be more trouble keeping bangs than not.

Being so short, it’s notoriously difficult to keep bangs off your face – after all, showing them on your face is the main point of cutting them at all, isn’t it? However, if your lifestyle includes a lot of activities in which it’d be more annoying to have bangs in your eyes all the time, such as exercising, swimming, cooking, or even studying for long periods of time, then you might want to reconsider the move to cut bangs.
