Sarah Tanno: It depends on my role that day. I could be doing a makeup demo with the newest products, talking to all my favorite outlets about trends, getting someone ready for a big red-carpet moment with my Marc Jacobs Beauty products, or even creating images for photo-shoots for upcoming campaigns and more. It really is my dream job.

What’s your best memory since working with Marc Jacobs Beauty?

There have been countless incredible moments. My first photo-shoot with Marc Jacobs Beauty was a real eye-opener for me.

We were shooting for the Highliner campaign – they put me in a room with the product and the model, and told me I could do whatever I wanted to. They didn’t even have references of what they were looking for – they just gave me full creative control. I knew from that moment on that they not only put artistry first, but support it in every way possible. That feeling has never changed during my time with them.

Other major moments include the Super bowl with Lady Gaga, the countless red carpet appearances, and the day I got to meet one of my idols, Marc, himself.

What are some of the most iconic looks you’ve done for Lady Gaga?

I really loved creating Gaga’s Countess look for American Horror Story, her look for her SuperBowl half-time show, as well as her iconic looks for her Bowie tribute at the 2016 Grammy Awards.

In reference to one of the most iconic looks you’ve mentioned, what’s the key challenge you faced in creating it?

The key challenge is probably making sure her look lasts throughout her performances, because with the strong lighting and physically strenuous dance routines, you’d have to make sure the makeup can endure all that change!

How do you make sure that Lady Gaga’s makeup is able to last through her shows and events?

I don’t like to prep with lotions that are too emollient. For example, I love the Shameless Youthful-Look 24-H Longwear Foundation because it feels really light, is self-setting (so there’s no need to powder) and it’s a long wearing formula. For eyes, there’s never been a problem with any of Marc Jacobs Beauty’s Highliner products – they will never melt on you.

When it comes to prepping her for these looks, what are your go-to steps and products?

I honestly always have a different process. I’m an artist and so is she, so we don’t follow a set routine. I just go with my instincts and try to always add to a moment, but not take away from it. As far as products we really trust, I would say the Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara is one of our favourites. We also love the Shameless foundation and all the Highliner Gel Crayons, especially the new Glam Glitter collection.

Lady Gaga is often known for her flamboyant makeup styles. How do you think our readers can replicate some of the looks you’ve created for her without looking too overdone?

I would say to just go into it being fearless. Know that colour and shapes are fun and don’t be afraid to try something new for yourself. If it doesn’t work, just wipe it off – that’s the way I treat makeup!

It’s not always a home run, but if you have confidence, that’s always the thing that will shine through. You have to remember to stay true to who you are and what works for you.

Share with us more about the Marc Jacobs Beauty Fall 2018 collection. Are there any product that you think will be great for a Lady Gaga-esque look?
