You’ve always known that exfoliation is important for your skin. Your scalp is an extension of your skin and functions somewhat similarly. Just like your facial (and body) skin, sebum, impurities and dead skin cells accumulate on top of your scalp. This pile-up is one of the reasons why you may be facing the problem of brittle hair or even hair loss.

The solution is actually obvious. If we scrub our face regularly to rid if of this top layer of impurities and dead skin cells, then our scalp is severely in need of scrubbing to do the same for it! In the last few years, we are seeing more and more hair brands coming up with hair scrubs.

The benefits of using hair scrubs? Shinier hair that’s stronger, and preventing hair loss.

If you’re ready to add this important step to your hair care routine, check out the hair scrubs that we recommend.

1. L’Occitane Aromachologie Revitalizing Fresh Cleansing Scrub

This has very fine scrubbing particles that gently slough away the gunk from your scalp. Like all other L’Occitane products, this hair scrub contains a mixture of essential oils and botanical ingredients, including mint, which will leave your scalp feeling cool and fresh. You can use this hair scrub in place of your shampoo, or use it weekly as a pre-shampoo routine.

The L’Occitane Aromachologie Revitalizing Fresh Cleansing Scrub retails at SGD40, and is available at all L’Occitane boutiques.

2. The Body Shop Fuji Green Tea Refreshingly Purifying Cleansing Hair Scrub

Compared to the L’Occitane hair scrub that we’ve just mentioned, the scrub particles in this hair scrub feel larger. While the downside is that it isn’t as gentle, it makes up for it for the sense of cleanliness you feel after the scrub. The product also promises to stimulate blood flow.

However, what makes up for it is the sense of cleanliness and how it promises to stimulate blood flow. Its scent is also very pleasing – it’s made of a blend of Japanese green tea, mint menthol, salt crystals, and Community Trade honey.

The Body Shop Fuji Green Tea Refreshingly Purifying Cleansing Hair Scrub retails at SGD29 and is available at all The Body Shop stores.

3. Alterna Haircare Caviar Clinical Exfoliating Scalp Facial

The formula in this shampoo doesn’t just contain ingredients such as fruit enzymes to chemically remove impurities, it also comes with a bristled applicator that you can use to physically slough them off. The bristles on the applicator are soft and flexible, so it is comfortable to use it on your scalp. Use it in a circular motion to also improve circulation.

The Alterna Haircare Caviar Clinical Exfoliating Scalp Facial retails at SGD70, and is available here.

4. L’Oreal Paris EverFresh Micro-Exfoliating Scrub

This 100% vegan hair scrub is made up of a sulfate- and paraben-free formula. Using apricot seeds to remove impurities and build-up, this hair scrub is to be used before you shampoo.

The L’Oreal Paris EverFresh Micro-Exfoliating Scrub retails at SGD19.90 and is available at Watsons, Guardian, and all major super-/hyper-marts.

5. Kiehl’s Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment

This is a gentle scrub that is made up of micronised apricot and argan exfoliators. Dermatologist-tested, it promises to balance scalp, loosen flaky buildup, and stimulate healthy turnover on the surface of the scalp. It is particularly recommended for those who suffer from dandruff.

The Kiehl’s Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment retails at SGD54 and is available at all Kiehl’s stores.
