Picture this: You’ve just completed a satisfying spin class, feeling accomplished and energised. Yet, as you cool down and begin to relax, an unwelcome sensation creeps up… Your skin starts to itch.

It’s an all-too-familiar annoyance for many fitness enthusiasts. But why does this happen? And is there a scientific explanation behind the post-workout itch?

Ahead, we’ll reveal the triggers behind exercise-induced itch and what you can do to soothe and prevent it.

Pssst! Keep reading, because we’ll share more about how you can score a FREE spin class and an exclusive goodie bag from Bioderma!

What causes itchy skin after a workout?

Heat and sweat

During exercise, our bodies heat up as our metabolic rate increases and muscles work overtime. This rise in body temperature triggers the dilation of blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow to the skin’s surface in an attempt to scatter heat through our droplets of sweat.

While an increased blood flow to the skin can cause a warm sensation, it also plays a role in triggering that dreaded post-workout itch.

When we sweat, moisture accumulates on our skin, creating a warm and damp environment. The combination of heat and moisture can disrupt the skin barrier’s integrity, causing a mild irritation or itchiness.

Dry skin and dehydration

Vigorous exercise, especially in dry environments or with low humidity (such as an air-conditioned gym), can deplete the skin’s natural moisture and leave it more prone to irritation and itching.

To make matters worse, dehydration resulting from sweating can exacerbate skin dryness, intensifying the itchiness.

Clothing and chemical irritants

Our skin comes into contact with various materials during exercise, such as synthetic fabrics or harsh detergents used to launder workout clothes.

Some of these materials may contain chemicals that irritate the skin, leading to itchiness. What’s more, friction caused by certain types of exercise or ill-fitting clothing can further exacerbate the irritation.

Maintaining proper hydration, keeping your skin clean and moisturised, and wearing breathable clothing can all help reduce post-workout itchiness.

bioderma atoderm huile de douche

The Atoderm Huile de douche is a gentle cleansing oil specifically formulated for dry, sensitive, and irritated skin. This shower oil is formulated with Skin Barrier Therapy patent, which prevents the adhesion of S.aureus (it sounds like a dinosaur, but it’s actually bacteria responsible for aggravating your skin) bacteria on skin, reducing itch and irritation with every shower.

You won’t have to worry about it leaving a greasy slip on your skin too. The gel-like texture actually transforms into an ultralight, creamy foam that rinses off clean without stripping your skin of its moisture, perfect for post-exercise as it helps alleviate any itchiness or discomfort.

bioderma atoderm pp baume

Complementing the shower oil is Bioderma’s Atoderm PP Baume, a rich and nourishing balm specially developed for very dry, irritated skin. It contains vitamin PP (a.k.a. niacinamide) to stimulate the production of ceramides to lock in moisture and restore a healthy skin barrier.

The balm’s non-greasy texture quickly absorbs into the skin, providing long-lasting comfort and reducing any post-workout itch or irritation.

This is your chance to explore Bioderma’s renowned bodycare duo. Make sure you mark your calendars and get ready to indulge in an exciting fitness session at Ground Zero while treating your skin to the care it deserves.
