The desire for a fuller bust is a common aspiration for many women. In today’s market, numerous breast enhancement products are readily available and promise quick and easy results; beauty shelves are overflowing with pills or creams while salons are offering “bust massages”.

These are marketed as natural means of breast enlargement and claim to enhance your bust, enticing with their seemingly non-invasive approach.

However, the question remains: are these claims too good to be true? To really answer this question, we appointed the help of Dr Pek Chong Han, a medical director and consultant plastic surgeon at Polaris Plastic Surgery.

P.S. Read to the end to find a safer, more effective way to enhance both your chest and confidence!

So, How Effective Are Breast Enhancement Products?

If you’re as sceptical as I am, these questions probably have crossed your mind before: “How trustworthy or effective are these products?”, “Do they have adverse or unwanted side effects?” and “Are these products simply a clever marketing ploy designed to capitalise on insecurities?”.

It’s a flawed promise! Various breast enhancement products tout impressive results, yet there is a crucial missing element — scientific evidence — which makes the question of legitimacy a valid one.

In 2014, the Push Up Drink “supplement” that promised to give women a “perfect heart-shaped chest” was unveiled to possibly be in breach of the Trade Descriptions Ordinance and reported on the South China Morning Post to have breast enlargement claims that were not backed up by science.

Meanwhile, CNA released an article in 2021 that Tokyo Bust Express gave an undertaking to the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) to cease false claims about its bust enhancement treatments and products as well as using pressure sales tactics.

There has even been a case brought to court where the marketers of Bloussant’s breast enhancement products were required to halt false and unsubstantiated claims.

“There are many ‘over-the-counter’ breast enhancement products that can be found. Often, these are marketed to increase or enhance bust size. Unfortunately, most if not all of these products often lack any scientific basis or good quality scientific evidence to support the marketed claims,” said Dr Pek.

The reality is that these claims are rarely supported by credible clinical trials, leaving consumers with little to no guarantee of effectiveness.

Additionally, the unregulated nature of these products raises concerns about potential health risks associated with unknown ingredients, allergic reactions, or potential side effects.

What About Natural Remedies and Lifestyle Changes?

As crazy as it may sound (or not), you probably have also heard of some natural methods or lifestyle changes that can increase breast size or give a lifting effect.

Alas, these are also myths. We could do certain exercises to help increase the strength and tone our chest muscles, but that won’t help us achieve the exact, ideal shape we’re looking for.

“There are some factors which may influence the size of one’s breasts. Most of these relate to hormonal-related changes, such as puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Certain genetic and/or medical conditions may also affect one’s breast size.

Natural remedies and lifestyle changes are often common myths some may attribute to the enhancement of one’s chest — these often are not effective in most individuals and perhaps serve to distract or confuse. Regardless, even if there were any changes to one’s chest size, it would be very modest at best,” shared Dr Pek.

Fat Grafting or Breast Implants: Which is Right for Me?

Of course, breast implants are the typical way one would choose for breast augmentation but fat grafting is an up-and-coming option that’s becoming more common.

If you’re wondering which is the better counterpart, there’s actually no single “better” option between fat grafting and breast implants for breast augmentation. It depends on your individual goals and circumstances.

“Fat grafting and breast implants are both effective ways of increasing breast size. Fat grafting, which is a procedure to transfer unwanted fats from parts of the body such as the tummy or thighs to the breasts, would be more suitable for patients who would prefer a modest increase in the breast size, keeping the original position and shape of their breasts,” Dr Pek explained.

While fat grafting requires a longer recovery time and has a limited increase in size (which may not be suitable for dramatic changes), it gives a more natural look and feel and has fewer long-term complications.

You can achieve your ideal bust, get rid of unwanted fats per se, and “shape” your figure all at the same time through an entirely safe procedure — it’s a true win-win!

Meanwhile, a breast implant (also commonly known as breast augmentation) is the most versatile way of enhancing one’s breast.

“It allows the use of the implant to overcome certain shortfalls of the original breast, correcting mild droopiness, and improving breast shape and projection, allowing for a more lifted and enhanced look. This is especially useful for ladies who experience deflation of their breasts after breastfeeding,” said Dr Pek.

According to Dr Pek, breast enhancement using fat grafting or breast implants both can produce excellent results for patients, with the right selection process.

Moreover, it’s essential to speak with a certified plastic surgeon to understand which option would be better for you!

Common Breast Augmentation Concerns

Women considering breast augmentation often have a variety of concerns. Some common ones that Polaris Plastic Surgery encounters are: (1) whether their breast augmentation result would look natural and; (2) whether the patients would be selecting the right implant size.

“Choosing the right procedure for you is an intricate process. At Polaris Plastic Surgery, we will take the time to understand your lifestyle needs, physical activity levels, and life goals before considering what type of augmentation is best suited for you.

On top of that, we understand that choosing the exact size implants may be challenging — patients would have access to AI simulation tools with actual implant sizes to visualise their results virtually, which are excellent guiding tools in the consultation process.

Finally, our surgeons have experience in the latest techniques and technology available for breast augmentation, to ensure that we deliver the best possible results for our patients with minimal downtime,” Dr Pek assured.
