Crazy Rich Asians is among our favourite movies, and a recent rewatch has led us to become totally obsessed again.
Fortunately, more Crazy Rich Asians content might be coming soon, as there’s news of a spin-off in the works, with the character Astrid Leong taking centre stage, played by actress Gemma Chan.
We were immediately floored by Gemma’s sense of style and beauty when we checked out her Instagram. So, we did what we always do – we searched around and gathered all her beauty tips.

She is a fan of line-reducing and skin-firming ingredients
Gemma’s go-to facial serum is the L’Oreal Paris Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum (S$49.90, 30ml), which contains 1.5% hyaluronic acid to instantly plump the skin and reduce fine lines through deep hydration.
Her favourite moisturiser is the Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream (S$405, 50ml), an effective and popular brand, especially among celebrities like Michelle Yeoh.
She uses eye cream and an eye massager
She is also a fan of The Inkey List Caffeine Under-Eye Serum (S$18, 15ml) and the L’Oreal Paris Hyaluronic Acid and Caffeine Eye Serum (US$32.99/~S$45.69, 0.67oz) as they really help to reduce the puffiness around her eyes.
To massage it in, she uses the Foreo Iris Illuminating Eye Massager (S$219), which can help combat signs of stress and fatigue.
She uses a facial roller in the morning
In the early morning, Gemma loves using a facial roller on her skin as it can really help to decrease puffiness, improve blood circulation, and soothe the skin.
She does facial rolling between the steps of applying her eye cream and facial moisturiser. She makes sure to cover every inch of her face, including her neck.
She used to suntan, but not anymore
A former ‘sun worshipper’ as she calls it, she used to love sun tanning and enjoying the feel of the sun against her skin.
However, she no longer participates in suntanning as it can be quite damaging to the skin. Instead, she sweeps some bronzer across her face for a sun-kissed glow.
She preps her lips before makeup
Gemma prepares her lips the night before she needs to wear makeup. Her go-to lip product is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask (S$27, 20g).
This leave-on lip mask is recommended to be applied before sleep, as it contains a unique moisture wrap ingredient which locks in moisture to keep your pout soft and nourished.
She only applies foundation where she needs it
This actress only applies foundation where she thinks she needs it instead of using it all over her face.
She does not like the feel of foundation on her forehead, so she stays clear of that area. She feels that foundation can really help to balance out her complexion.
She uses a cotton bud to soften her eyeliner
Soft edges seem to be a big part of Gemma’s look as she loves to soften up the edge of her eyeliner using a cotton bud.
We think the idea here is to have softer-looking eyes that don’t appear too fierce or too gothic due to the blurred edges.
She uses a nourishing lipstick
Gemma loves the L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Reds of Worth Lipstick in shade Successful Red (US$10.99/~S$15.22, 0.13oz), which contains nourishing argan oil and vitamin E.
A smooth lipstick, it provides intense coverage in a single swipe. Plus, it is totally non-drying, smudge-proof, and lasts all day long.
She applies invisible lip liner for ‘makeout lips’
Rather than using a lip liner that matches her lipstick, Gemma goes for a nude-coloured liner that looks pretty much invisible against her skin.
She uses a fluffy eyeshadow brush to buff out the colour of her lipstick so that there is a soft focus of colour. This way, your lips will look like you’ve just had a quick makeout session.
She tries not to overpluck her eyebrows
As a teenager, Gemma was warned by her mother to not over-pluck her eyebrows, but unfortunately, she did not listen to her at the time.
This led to her having nearly pencil-thin eyebrows that took several years to grow back, so it’s something that she is careful not to do again.
She unwinds with poetry
Poetry is something that this actress reads to unwind with. Currently, she is reading through a book called A Poem For Every Night of the Year.
The book has poems curated towards a special day or season and allows Gemma to have a bit of beauty in her mind each day.
