5. Minced turkey instead of beef

Replace anything that needs minced beef with turkey. If you’re making spaghetti bolognese, and want a tastier alternative to chicken, then minced turkey is going to be your saviour. With similar protein profiles but less fat than beef, turkey is the middle ground between chicken breast and chucked beef.

6. Bananas instead of ice-cream

This one’s fun: Leave a few bananas in the freezer, and when they’ve frozen, remove the skin and mash the flesh up to make your very own quick and easy ice-cream! You’re going to get the texture of ice cream without the fattening dairy and high sugar content. Check the recipe above for a super simple ice cream recipe!

7. Nuts instead of croutons

Croutons are diet sabotage. These salty, simple-carbohydrate-filled bits mar what is essentially a healthy meal. Do yourself a favour and get unsalted nuts like walnuts and pecan nuts into your salads! Crush them up, or even drop them in whole.

8. Tea instead of soda

Colas are satisfying after a meal – we know that – but hear us out. Buy green mint tea bags, and make your own iced green tea every morning. It cools your throat after lunch, leaves you refreshed and doesn’t have any of the sugar. You can drink that all day!

9. Honey instead of sugar

This is a common, but often forgotten, alternative. Honey is a great product to have in your kitchen if you’re trying to lose weight because it makes Greek yoghurt taste better, and sweeten tea without adding sugar. Moreover, it has antibacterial and antioxidant properties, so it’s definitely better than just plain sugar.

10. Zucchini instead of pasta

Zucchini is one of the best replacements for pasta. Use a vegetable peeler and run it lengthwise to make strips of zucchini “pasta”, then add your pasta sauce and preferred ingredients! It’s a superb low-calorie alternative that will keep you full for longer.
