Singapore’s humidity can wreak havoc on curly, frizzy hair, and many can vouch for this!

That’s likely why many often choose to get hair rebonding done. It’s basically a way to “relax” our hair, making it easier to handle and maintain daily. And let’s face it, not many of us have the time to style our hair every day.

We’re sure you’ve heard of the classic hair rebonding, but did you know this method has received an upgrade?

There are now several other hair rebonding techniques, such as soft and volume rebonding, which can provide a naturally straight result, akin to the classic approach.

Bookmark this page, as we’ve got the 411 on hair rebonding that you should know about before going for your next hair salon appointment.

What Is Hair Rebonding?

Hair Rebonding What Is It

Hair rebonding is a technique developed in Japan that takes inspiration from hair straightening methods dated all the way back to the days of ancient Egypt – flat iron plates were used to manage unruly hair but this primitive method ended up causing more burns than delivering smooth hair, ouch!

Hair rebonding became hugely popular in Southeast Asia and subsequently the world not long after it made its debut – that’s because the service has proven itself effective in making curly, frizzy tresses much more manageable.

In essence, it’s a chemical hair treatment where the process includes applying heavy-duty straightening lotion (also known as a relaxant) onto the hair to break up existing natural hair bonds which are responsible for our hair’s physical quality (straight, wavy, curly).

After the first step, a flat iron will be used to “reset” the hair bonds before a neutraliser is applied to link the now-straightened bonds up with one another.

Back when it was first introduced, the technology was not as advanced so instead of natural-looking results, traditional hair rebonding ended up giving a result that’s ultra-straight, flat, and in some cases, unflattering.

Fast forward to today, the technique has significantly evolved over the years and is still sought after by women who are struggling with tough, frizzy curls and want a foolproof way to handle them.

It’s also usually recommended for those with coarse and very curly hair as this hair texture requires high heat and strong chemical products to tame the unmanageability.

However, other techniques such as soft rebonding and volume rebonding are gradually gaining popularity too. But what exactly are these rebonding methods, and how do they differ from the classic technique?

Unlike the blunt hair ends that straight rebonding delivers, soft rebonding focuses on creating naturally straight locks while taking care of frizziness and dryness.

You also ought to know that soft rebonding may retain some of your natural curls for an au naturel look, while classic rebonding can only give pin-straight locks, as the former utilises milder chemicals and lower heat temperatures compared to the latter.

Want hair that balances between wavy locks and straight tresses? Volume rebonding may just be your answer.

Marrying the powers of a perm with rebonding, your hairstylist is able to give you an in-between finish which is often spotted on K-pop stars who wear their hair down often.

Volume rebonding gets the job done by creating soft, bouncy curls at the ends of the hair while straightening hair roots and mid-lengths for a soft and feminine look. The best part? Volume rebonding works just as well for coarse hair as it does for finer hair textures.

You can choose between C-curl volume rebonding or S-curl volume rebonding, both of which are currently available in most salons in Singapore. And some of these salons offer cheap volume rebonding services too!

The former is often referred to as the ‘Magic Setting Perm’ in Korean hair salons and it involves straightening the upper parts of the hair before finishing off with a C-curl perm at the hair ends.

Meanwhile, the latter visibly tames frizz and offers more natural waves in your hair by adding loose curls for a more defined appearance.

How Long Does a Hair Rebonding Treatment Last?

Hair rebonding results can typically last for about six to seven months, but this may still vary based on each individual’s hair care routine and hair growth cycle.

Hence, many hair professionals prefer their customers to go for a touch-up hair rebonding session every three to six months to maintain their silky, smooth locks.

Bear in mind that hair rebonding is a permanent process, which means that rebonded hair will remain straight permanently while any new hair growth will have your natural hair texture.

If your hair rebonding is successful, you do not need to do rebonding on the already rebonded hair.

Good question! Here are some expert tips that you should definitely follow if you want your rebonded hair to last longer:

  • Hold off on washing your hair: Sorry, folks. Unfortunately, this is a bit of a non-negotiable because exposing your hair to water immediately after rebonding means you’ll be washing away all the chemicals that were initially applied to lock in the newly structured bonds in your hair, leaving you with flat hair instead of silky locks. It’s recommended to wait at least three days before washing your hair after a rebonding treatment – use a dry shampoo on days you can’t wash your hair.
  • Stay away from the sun, please: Prolonged sun exposure can cause serious damage to your hair (and skin!), leading to dry and brittle strands (translation: your gorgeous mane that you got from the salon will be rendered into a frizzy mess). Give your hair some much-needed protection with a leave-in conditioner that contains SPF.
  • Feed your hair with nourishing products: Amp up your haircare routine with hair oils and hair masks. It’s also recommended to use a treatment mask after shampooing each time to condition and detangle your hair. By nourishing your hair, you’re helping to strengthen it while simultaneously reducing porosity, preventing dullness, and boosting elasticity to lessen hair breakages.
  • Don’t pack on more damage to your hair with heat and chemicals: Try to avoid heated tools such as straighteners, curlers, hot brushes, and so on. Having said that, you can blow-dry your hair after shampooing. In fact, hairstylists do not recommend air-drying rebonded hair as leaving your hair damp for a prolonged period causes it to swell and weaken in the long run. Additionally, try not to colour your hair for at least six months after the hair rebonding treatment as well – you’d want to let your hair rest and regain strength first, not wreck it even further.
  • Don’t tuck your hair behind your ears: If you have a habit of tucking your hair behind your ear, it’s probably time to stop doing it if you’re going to rebond your hair. This is because tucking your tresses behind your ear leaves it with creases and kinks that will mess up the straightened hair bonds.
